3.78 gears on V6
On Mondy I have to get my rear end rebuilt. They are going to install 3.78 gears. I know there's someone whio has had this done. How big of a difference is there in power? And is that a good ratio for everyday driving?

Gears dont add power, there just a torque multiplier. You will notice a significant difference over the stock 3.27's. You may be happier with 4.10's since you have a V6.

How would the 4.10 effect gas mileage? I drive a lot for my job so I don't want to decrease it too much. |

i loved my 4.10's but i needed a tune real bad afterwards, to take off my top speed limiter. i was hitting my top speed in the QM. :larry03gt but i loved um for the "street"
edit* one mistake i made was not to put a tlok in there while i was changing gears, i would also do that. |

We put 3.73s in my dads 00 V6 5spd and WOW what a difference. I loved it. It didnt make quite as much difference in my GT, but probably because it already had plenty of torque....still the perfect gear for both cars IMO. Not too low for highway and not too high for performance. Perfect all around gear...you will be VERY happy with them.

All the stories commonly heard about 4.10s killing highway mileage is also BS.

unknown , even to me........

now try it with over drive off. in heavy rain/slick roads, i drive with OD off. your rpms will be around 4k at 60 with od off, or at least that what i calcualted by useing the gearing numbers.
with od on, yeah, 4.10's wont be so bad, if you dont mind the engine hum. |

meh, OD off give a bit more throtle responce. you dont have to push teh pedal quite as far to get going, so you can feather it easier. as for the hum, i always had a hum, even befor i did my exhaust.

Oh yeah, OD off does make a noticeable difference in throttle response, and it's too bad Ford set the default setting to "On". I was referring to the point that is often brought up that "4.10s will kill your gas mileage on the highway". Not true, because cruising at highway speeds, I would likely have OD engaged, and my experience with 4.10s has demonstrated that mileage drops little if at all from running with stock rear gears. Performance sure takes a turn for the better though, when you want it to. We've taken my wife's daily driver '04 V6 automatic on several 2,000+ mile road trips after switching to 4.10s and a T-Lok and the gas mileage was not killed at all. With OD engaged, it doesn't reach 3,000 rpm until just below 80 mph, and maybe I haven't ever noticed a hum because it's so much quieter than my own car with the LoudMouths.
