351 Heads on a 302?!?

I was talking to a buddy of mine on post, he is a diesel mechanic by trade but used to do dirt track racing in Georgia. He claimed that you can put 351 heads on a 302 block w/ dometop pistons and increase your compression substantially. He called a 'poor mans' stroker, anyone ever heard of doing this? Will 351 heads even fit on a 302 block???

Thanx for any advice in advance - joe

One thing to remember,302 blocks have 7/16 head bolts
and 351s use 1/2.Need the hb washers or aftermarket
1/2 shank by 7/16 thread bolts.
Its not a stroker as the stroke is not increased or decreased.

Just remember that the 69-70 351 Windsor heads are the only ones really worth using. Any others are the same as a 302 head. They flow about the same as a GT-40 head, but you must use the reduction washers or bolts and have hardned valve seats installed. You wont raise compression much unless you have them milled then you may run into P-V interference. If you can find a set of 289 heads that are ported you can bump up compression pretty good and have a somewhat decent head without milling them.

289 heads are GREAT for bumping compression...I believe that they are 54cc...

Anywhere between 52-56cc...Most of the time there on the lower end.

unless you already have them and they are good, i don't think it is worth it with the low price of a set of new heads that will perform better.

if you want to keep it n/a, just go ahead and get AFR 165s or 185s(better hp numbers after the engine peaks). like someone else said, dont forget ARP head bolts and quality gaskets if you really wanha bump the compression.
