4 lug 8.8 axle strength

how much abuse can a stock 3.08 8.8 handle? i want to put new gears in but i am worried about the axles or c-clips or anything else crapping out. i have not done anything major to the engine i belive it's stock. i will eventually put 5 lug disc on all 4 wheels but money is tight right now. i am planning on the SVO aluminum girdle with the gear change.

street driven, on street tires? if so... i believe the stock 8.8 will be more than strong enough.

you'll begin to see problems when runnin' sticky tires at the sticky track.

Keep in mind that you can buy hardened moser axles for cheaper than you can buy stock axles from ford. From what I have been told the axles are the weak link. Course if you want to be sure, then just get a 31 spline diff with hardened axles. You won't break that.

What is the first thing to go, carrier or axles? If I'm shooting for sub 1.8's, should I be moderately concerned about anything because this is my daily driver?

i know a guy, pete campbell, that has had dozens and dozens of runs with his 28 spliners (in a 7.5 rear, no less) cutting at least 1.8 to 1.65 depending. he tried to keep it around 1.7, and the axles held. it's probably right around there though.
