a rebuilt 289 with afr 165s, and a GOOD cam would get you down the road GREAT.
I dont know what carb and intake you have, but you could do a demon 650 with an rpm intake a little bigger cam. would SCREAM in your car.
Just to give you an idea, Jeremy in austin, who now has an ls1 in his 86... Had the demon 650 a descent size lunati cam and afrs with LTs. it made 360 at the wheels and around 540 on the bottle with stock block. I can PM you some videos of that car on the street, I know i cant post them here.
