project 306 coupe
so about 2 weeks ago i bought a 91 coupe 4 cyl to drive daily and later convert to V8.... well the money pit has started... part one, 5sp swap....
so the other day, my stupid auto trans went out on me.. it was spewing so much fluid that i couldn't go more than a mile and a half between filling it up (5-6 quarts at a time) so i debated and debated, and i decided a 5sp swap was in order... since i hate autos anyway.. so today it started, i'll post crappy phone pics later on.. i got the interior torn apart, because you can install a 5sp shifter w/ the console in, but you can't remove an auto shifter... first set back lol i got the driveshaft out, and LUCKILY i decided to buy the driveshaft as well as the starter out of the donor car, because even though i was told they're the same, my driveshaft is about 3 inches shorter than the new one... so i hope one of them is right..... well that's it as of now, it's about 5pm and i'm tired... but i'll head back out in a min to get the auto out the rest of the way.. waiting on ratcheting wrenches to get the rest of the bell housing bolts out.. then the cross member and the auto should be out... wish me luck guys. well, day one of phase one has come to a close.... i got almost everything i wanted done... transmission is hangin' on by 2 or 3 bolts (was hop9ing to have it out today but oh well) however, i spent a lot more time parts shopping than i had hoped... but the pedals are completely installed... my only issue i'm having is that now, the blinkers dont blink, but that could be due to a low battery.. if not, i'll figure that out later on, it's possible i jarred the relay and caused it to go out... idk. i've realised now though, that a pedal swap isn't exactly a cake walk.. infact, it's the most difficult thing i've done today.

well, day 2 was complete bullshit... i had a friend pick up a flywheel that the salvage yard told me would work.... well, it didn't.. so i haven't even touched the car except i fixed the blinkers.. i ordered the flywheel i need from autozone today, it will be in wed. but i'm kinda glad i got that wrong flywheel because it cost half as much as the core charge on the correct one.. and they took it as the core..

CLUTCH AND FLYWHEEL ARE IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! after all that bullshit about finding bolts, i went to the dealer and got the measurements, and went to a bolt suply store and got them all for 10 bucks cash on the spot, where the dealer wanted about 90, and they would have taken 2-3 days

later that evening, i put on the bell housing, and found out i needed more parts
i ordered the parts which were for the clutch linkage, the next day, i finnished putting in the transmission, bolted up the cross member, put the exhaust back, and bolted up the starter... went FAIRLY smoothly, slight hickup w/ the cross member bolts as they are SEVEN INCHES LONG!!!!! so i found some in the shed and got it done.. drive shaft went back in the same day. this morning, i went to ford to pick up the clevis pins and hooks for the clutch linkage, bolted my seat and 90% of my interior back in, and started her up... i drove it all the way to dallas mustang to pick up a upr firewall adjuster and mach 1 billet shift knob... (10 bucks, i didn't want the billet, so if anyone wants to trade for a non aluminum ball shift knob.....) haven't put the clutch adjuster on yet, but i think my syncros on 3rd and 4th are bad, and i think there's something wrong w/ whatever shift fork operates 2nd... oh and that syncro too... but hey, i've got less than 400 invested in the whole swap, 200 of which were clutch and flywheel, and another hundred was the adjuster, shift knob and random misc parts, and 30 the pedals... trans, bell housing, driveshaft, clutch cable, starter and cross member and computer were only $50 |

so maybe I didn't read closely - what type of shifter you putting in?
I've got a Steeda Tri-Ax with a Pro 5.0 shifter handle. The 5.0 handle leans towards driver knee just like Steeda, but the handle has a shorter throw. It's fuckn awsome. This mixed combo works well.

i didn't see when you posted this sorry, i used a stock shifter because i have a tri-ax in SA but i have to go get it... after much debating, i've decided to pick up a V8 t5 and install it (picking it up next weekend maybe installing the next sunday after that..)
i also started gathering parts for phase 2 of my project... EFI 302 swap... i'm not releasing specs on what parts i'm buying/using until it's done and enough ppl have ridden in it and say it's fast so that when i tell you what i have in it, you either wont believe me or you'll start to realise it's not all about high dollar parts... so far, i have the block, heads, pistons, rods, crank, distributor, headers, and timing cover.. that's literally it.. NOTHING else. the bearings are going to be clevites for $65 for both sets.. i'm going to need rings, a gasket set, a oil pump, water pump, new alt/ps pump and brackets, and motor mounts... i'll obviously need all the efi stuff, but i know exactly what i want, and i know where to get most of it.. that pretty much covers it other than hardware... i'll post more when i gather more, and maybe i'll post some motor pics when it's built.
