Amp question
Got a question. Yesterday, I put 4 new Infinity Reference 6 x 8's in my truck. They sound much better than the stock speakers just off the head unit alone. But, I want an amp. Here are the specs for the speakers:
http://infinitysystems.com/caraudio/product.aspx?ProdId='REF6812CF'&Ser=REF&Cat=MEL And here are the specs of the amp I am looking at. http://www.cardiscountstereos.com/ca...uct+%23=A4004T First off, are Audiobahn amps good for midrange speakers? Or are they good for subs, but, not so great on midrange speakers? Second, will this amp be sufficient? I know it says 4 x 50w RMS @ 4 ohm. The speakers are rated at 60w RMS. Will the 10w difference significantly reduce the output of the speakers? Or will the difference between this amp, and one that can run at 60w or so RMS be worth spending more money on? I want loud, and crystal clear. I know the Infinity's are capable of providing what I am looking for, I just need to know if this amp is worth the money to make that happen. EDIT: The link to infinity's website isnt working, so I copied the specs and posted them here. The MSRP says $119, and I got them for $79 at circuit city. http://www.cardiscountstereos.com/ca...uct+%23=A6004T Here is a 75w x 4 RMS Audiobahn amp for $10 less than the other one I posted. Since the speakers are rated for 60w RMS, will running 75w RMS to them be a recepie for disaster? I can wire/install any system, and troubleshoot any system. I can match amps to subs all day, build boxes, whatever. But, I know jack shit about midranges. I know the numbers, and logic would say not to exceed the recommended wattage. But, I dont know just how bad the negative effects of exceeding the recommended wattage by 15w will be. I have had numerous systems with multiple amps pushing up to 10speakers in a truck I used to have, but, all the amps were cheap and under powered, except for the one on the sub.

Sorry , just saw this thread.
Its been awhile so what did you buy or hook up? How are the results? The only thing i can say without knowing what you have done is: Set the gains on your amp with a digital multimeter. JL audio has a tutorial on how to do that. Essentially you set the amps gain so that it won't send a clipped signal to the speakers. I just did this a few months ago and it made the difference. i can post links if you want more info, just LMK Last edited by John#21; 12-22-2005 at 12:20 AM. |

Audiobahn is so-so. It will work.
For the price i would go with the cheaper one. You could run your speakers with an amp that puts out 500WRMS if you set it correctly with a multimeter. Distortion from clipping is what really kills speakers. just make sure you use the Highpass cross over, somewhere around 60hz - Up. link to CA.com= good info in stickies but the members can be pricks if you don't search first. http://forums.caraudio.com/vb/index.php Last edited by John#21; 12-23-2005 at 07:35 AM. |

If you don't mind ebay, you can get really good deals on New amps for pretty cheap.
I just saw a 70x4 kenwood for ~ 120 + shipping. There are also phoenix gold in that price range that are equal to or better than audiobahn. |
