any body good with stereos?

the car we are working with is a 74 nova. the original stereo was a single speaker am unit. we put in a more modern am/fm/cd unit w/2 6x9 and a very small amp. when we were finished the stero had ALOT of rfi interference. sence then we have tried a rfi suppressor but it still has a good bit of noise. any sudgestions?

run the power and remote wires on the opposite side of the car of the RCAs/speaker wires.

check/change your ground.
also check the wires too. you may want to add space between them like BIGJNSA said.
your RFI may not be hooked up right either.
does the noise get worse or speed up with rpm?

As mentioned, check grounds, run main power wire seperately from the RCA cables. I've been able to get away with running my remote wire with the RCA's because it is such a small wire and I use good shielded RCA's. By interference, do you mean you get a high pitched whine in synchronous with the engine RPM's? If that is the case, try those things. Also, what kind of small amp are you using? If you are using a cheap no name brand just to get by, I might try a higher quality amp if you know a buddy that has one or happen to have an extra one to test it. I originally started my first stereo system in my old truck with an ebay amp special and well, it sucked. As soon as I put in a nice new pioneer amp, all noise gone, everything else wire wise was untouched. Just changed the amp, and problem solved. That's just my experience. Hope this helps.

Its more likely your power wires running with your RCA's like they said, once you put them on opposite sides, your problem will be solved...good luck...

can't aftermarket ignition coils cause some interference too or did I make that up? I thought I heard it somewhere.

I believe they can or even a stock coil/alternator can cause interference. But, it all boils down to having everything properly grounded and/or where the wires have been run in the vehicle.

Sounds like a plan, let us know how it turns out. If it's too much trouble to run them on the other side, you can also try running them down the center tunnel. That's what I did on the stang. Ran the RCAs down under the console and under the carpet to the trunk area. Just a suggestion!
