appearance/engine tech type question...

i'm approaching completion on my 306, it will have a vic jr. intake w/ a holley carb, once i make some more money at work i will be buying some better heads, and later on, i'll be upgrading to a 351 based motor... hopefully a mild 408 set up... so the real question is... can i make my 306 fit under my stock hood with an air cleaner?? i haven't bought motor mounts yet so i can buy i think up to 7/8 inch drop plus, when i do the 408, i believe they sell a k member where the motor mount mounts are lower....

the reason i want to use the stock hood or a SMALL cowl if possible... i think the over all look of my car will be better without the large cowl hood i origionally wanted... white 91 coupe with 17 inch "snowflakes".... (00 gt wheels)
what do you guys think?

With the 351 based engine you will have some trouble getting it all to fit under a stock hood. The lowering mounts will help, I would not use both the lowering mounts and the K member with lowered mount brackets. I have used the 3/4" lowering mounts and had problems with a Milodon oil pan hitting the rack, I had to lower the rack mounting tubes on the D&D K memeber. I fit a 460 under a stock hood once, but I made my own mounts, headers and pan. I moved the engine as far rearward as possible and down as far as possible with out the pan being a comprimise. I used Offinhouser Port O sonic intake, which is a low single plane intake and a '85 air cleaner. So it should be possible to get a 351 in a fox with a stock hood. If you do build a 408 or some other large 351 based engine, I would recomend a victor jr. or a Stealth intake. Both will raise the carb up at least an 1" higer than a performer intake. If I was going to build a 408 I would want to get the most out of it, so I would want a good intake and carb spacer. Getting a K member that has the second slots for the engine mounts that allow you to move the engine back closer to the firewall will help hood clearance. I would set the engine back with a K member, lower it some with lowering mount, then use a small cowl hood. The tubular K member, fiber glass hood will both help offset the weight of the 351. I would want to be able to use a good intake and a spacer to get the most out of a 408 if I was going to build one.

The car is still street driven, with a best of 10.21 at 131 mph with a 1.51 60' spinning lightly. With this combo it made a best of 460 hp and 410 lbs of torque at the wheels.

thats' not my car... just used it to get an idea of what i'm going for with the stance... i still need to buy brake pads before i swap on those spindels i got from you... then maybe lower it some more... not sure yet.

i have a 3/4 inch spacer on the carb that i may or may not use... and a vic jr. for the 306, NO idea yet about intake combo or anything for the 408, that's WAY later on... may even be efi...

i guess i'll get the lowered mounts, and give it a shot, and see what happens.. if it wont fit, i'll cut a hole in it, and get a cowl hood... but i want a SMALL hood.... and i'll see about the k member thing too, if it'll help to move the motor back... that'll help weight transfer too....

Lets put it this way. every Black or white lx sould have a small cowl. It is the perfect finishing touch.
