Doing the planning for a Big Bend Road Trip this weekend. I am looking to stay at Terlingua Ranch. I read alot of reviews and it looks hard to beat for the $$. Anyone been there?

Uh where in Terlingua? We did not notice places to stay in Terlingua, but there most likely is, we just did not look for hotels or motels in Terlingua. There were some tents set up accross from the old cemetary, not sure what those were about. I would bet there is an RV park, but I don't remember if there is. I am sure some of the hippies out there would let you stay with them for the weekend. There are some that have set up in the gost town and are claiming they are running a family crisis center, but they gave enough info to figure out that they are helping illeagals coming into this country. We got that info after asking them what families they were supposed to be helping, because we did not see many families out there.
Actualy, after thinking about the subject for a while, I think there is one new hotel and an older motel that was probably built in the '60s or '70s.

Not sure where that place is. In Terlingua, I would not worry about having safety problems, outside of Terlingua, would probably depend on exactly where outside of Terlingua. I would bet there are places out there people have gone to and were never heard from again. I feel safe just about anywhere, as long as I have an accurate, reliable rifle or pistol and plenty of ammo.

I havent been in about 15 years but I spent an entire summer in Study Butte and Terlingua. I felt right at home. There was a little cafe in Study Butte that I became a regular at as well as the Iguana Bar and Starlight Cafe in Terlingua. I recommend them all. I never stayed at the ranch but I visited and swam in their pool. I never once felt vulnerable or unsafe. Then again, I was there for 3 months so my face got to be familiar around those parts.

I talked to a driver of a armored truck that makes trips out to El Paso from San Antoinio. The last time I talked to him he told me he had been held up two or three times out in West Texas, he thinks by Mexican's. I have read a story in a paper or a magazine about three years ago that banditos would stop people driving on roads that were not far from the border, rob them and then haul ass back accross the border before U.S. authorities could get there. When we went down to Big Bend last summer we were told that the road that runs along the Rio Grande in the wester end of the park was shut down because too many people had been robbed and there were not enough officers to patrol just that section of road to keep it safe. So they shut that section of road down.
