Brake Problems

Unfortunately my brake knowledge is very limited. But here's my 'situation'

Today I was stopped at a red light, I pulled the E-Brake so I could take off my shoes without rearending someone or something silly like that. When I let off the ebrake. I had to put the brake petal to the floor to hold it. After that I had absolutely no brakes other than the ebrake.

So.. for some unknown reason I decided to drive it home using only the ebrake.. what fun!

Anyway, I had no brake fluid in the reservoir. But I can't figure out where its leaking.

Any ideas?

first fill up the reservoir. with the e-brake on, start the car in neutral. pump the brakes until they get firm. get out of the car and see if you see any puddles. most likely, it would leak from the master cylinder/brake booster area. if no leakage, check by each wheel. perhaps the bleeder valves were not tightened all the way. carefully, try them out at a slow pace. go to a brake check and they will do a complete brake inspection for free. whatever you do, DONT HAVE THEM DO IT!!! just get their opinion and post up the results. if it is a component failure, i would have big hoss, or another LSS mechanic do the work for you. they will do a great job at a really good price.

actually, pump em before starting the car to build pressure, then start it and pump em to find the leak. most cars with power assist brakes wont build pressure with the car running. but other than that, bigJ's got good ideas.. hehe

Well after a little investigating it is my master cylinder. the crappy part is no one in Austin carries a rebuilt one or a rebuild kit. I've gotta wait until Friday so they can ship one from Houston.

yep.. i every place i could think of. a couple of the places dont even carry them at all and the others all had to special order it. I really wouldn't have thought it would be so hard to find. and apparently the traction control feature causes the master cylinder to be extra pricey ... :thumbdown

Yup, because all of that in turn works with the ABS system.

I totally understand how the TC plays a part.. what I DON'T understand is how in the entire city of Austin, no one has the part. and half the places I called can't even get one. its a v6 mustang.. they're everywhere like fire ants in the summer..

Does Austin have Pep-Boys, Auto Zone, Oriellies, or NAPA type parts places? If not your local Ford dealership should have it but it will cost more. If your looking for a used one locally you can try http://car-part.com/

i've tried auto zone who has it on national backorder
Advanced Auto Parts doesn't even carry one
Pep- boys it will take a week to get
O'Reiley's is more expensive but can get one on Friday
CarQuest, NAPA, Van's and ACDelco were all closed. I'm calling them this morning.

I ended up getting a master cylinder at vans. Which ended up not being the problem. I still ended up at Leif Johnson, to get a new brake line. Thanks though
