A/C and cheap do not go hand in hand. You may save a few dollars trying to find used but you will also not be able to do that overnight. I'd say it's going to cost around $2000 for buying a complete new system plus an install.

Are you talking about converting it from R12 to 134A? I dont think this is an expensive process. Maybe someone who knows a little more can shed some more light on the subject.

As for the holes, I say take it to a body shop and have them fill it when they are going to paint the car.

I'd see if you could find a new trunklid in a junkyard, and get it painted when you repaint the rest of the car. It would be cheaper than filling the holes. I'm assuming it's a notch, given the luggage rack. If you paint it blue, maybe go with a darker blue (True Blue (very dark) or Sonic Blue, maybe even Corvette Electron Blue) with silver stripes-that'd be hot.

As for the A/C, if everything works when you turn it on except for the getting cold part, you probably just need a freon charge. If, when you turn it on, the belt squeals or the engine lugs down, your compressor is locked up and you need a new one. If it's case #1, take it to a shop, most A/C reconditioning services are in the $30-$40 range, plus the cost of freon (which is, btw, very expensive right now) If it's parts you need, search ebay, junkyards and websites for used parts.
