    Carb Help

I have a 67 Fastback GTA that I am working on getting running. The carb is proving to be difficult. Instead of rebuilding it i decided to replace it. I am having some issues with the config of the new one.

Here is the link to the replacement carb Holley Performance Products 600 CFM Four Barrel Street Carburetor*0-80457S

    Any help would be appreciated.

Question 1: Does the stop bell looking thing "NEED" to be on the new carb?
Question 2: How do I mount it if so?
Question 3: Where do the springs etc.. go .. the documentation is terrible

I know there are people out there that know how to do this stuff but I am lost.

I'd suggest rebuilding the old one. It's about the most simple carb to rebuild. What you have is the old Autolite 4100. It actually can be quite valuable if it's the original carb.

    1 No you dont.
2 No need to worry about it.
3 In the third picture move the
throttle return spring from where you have it to
either of the lower holes.Add an
additional spring from the large upper
hole foward to a bolt or bracket.2 springs
are better just in case 1 breaks.

Like previously said, the Autolite carb that was on your car is worth a bit of money, they are very simple, very simular to a Holley in function, Holley actualy coppied them when they made the Econo Master carbs and they are good performance carbs. The part you are asking about transfering over, increases engine rpm, if I remeber correct when the A/C is turned on, to compensate for the load created by the A/C compressor. Later Ford used electric solenoids to increase rpm with the A/C on. Yes you can make the car work without it, even with A/C, the old York compressors use a lot of power to drive, the newer Denso compressors that the modern conversion kits use, use a lot less power to drive. So what engine is in your car that had a Autolite four barrel? In '67 the only engines that Ford put in the Mustang that used that carb were the 289 and the 390.
The current combo is an '85 coupe with 302 bored and stroked to 364, Ported Twisted Wedge heads and a BXR intake, A9M ECM with a Moates chip, Doug Nash 5 spd, 4.56 gears, Hoosier 275/60/15 drag radials.
Daily driver '89 GT 302 stock block, crank, rods and pistons, ported GT-40P heads with stock valves, Ported Explorer intake, B302 cam, Z spec T5, 3.73 gears, Moates chip and no traction. Made 325 whp and 325 wtq.

    Carb Help more info

It's a 289 manifold and uppers on a 78 Lincoln Versalles 302 block. It also has a custom 4 bolt harmonic balancer so there's no telling what he did to it.

    I sent back the Holley.

I am thinking of having the current one rebuilt but I am concerned that the guy my grandpa bought the car from did some modification to it and I am afraid that if someone doesn't know exactly what they are doing that they will miss anything that he did to it custom.

Any suggestions? I am sooo close to getting it running.

Sell the carb to a collector.

Why do you say its a custom balancer?

the rebuild should not be a problem to try yourself. If not keep it and buy a used one off ebay. By the way if you want a dead reliable carb you could get a edelbrock 600cfm. I had a carter which is a knock off of the edelbrock that i never once needed to adjust or workon 14 years until i took it off.

    Autolite 4100 4bbl Carb Questions / issues

Thanks racer99 for your detailed info in the reply. The car has power steering but not A/C

I am considering sending the carb off to Carburetor, Carburetors, Carbs, Carb Parts. Pony Carburetors - Your Ford Carburetor Restoration and Part Sales Specialist to have it rebuilt. They are quoting "starting at 359.50 +parts and shipping". This seems extremely high considering I am shipping it to them and providing the good carb for them to rebuild not requiring a core.

I am attaching a picture of the actual tag from the Carb also for more granular info.

65mustangscott I appreciate your response as well I am sure I could rebuild it but I barely have the time right now and when I do have the time I probably won't have the money.

    thats a lot.
Kit would only be around $25 and what $10 for the bucket of chem dip?
Very simple to do, I would find the time to save $325 to get the same thing.
