Carb Spacer
Hi-ya Gang,
I have been contemplating getting a carb spacer for awhile, I really have one question/opinion: Should I go with a 1" or 2" spacer for a 302 ci, w/ an Edlebrock Cam, 600 CFM carb, and Intake (the performer package), would 2" be too much of a spacer for this setup?

Do u think I will need to get a bigger carb if I run a 2"? I actually want to cut out the hood, I wanna run the classic hood scoop w/ butterflies!
![]() Now the next question is which scoop do I run? Any tips on figuring out the height? Do ya'll think that the spacer alone would be enough to raise the normal scoop above the hood, or should I use the scoop w/ the extension?

I had to cut mine because the carb would not even without the spacer.You could try putting some clay on the air cleaner and closing the hood and measure the height to get a rough idea.
If our hood is orignial I would get an aftermarket and cut that. I couldn't bring my self to cut mine. |

That clay idea is a good one! Thanx for the tip...as far as cutting out my own hood I don't think I can bring myself to do it! I drilled out the holes for my hood pins and that was waaaaay high on the pucker factor itself, I can't imagine cutting out a hole for the scoop! I think I'm gonna have it done somewhere...
So what do ya'll think a good setup would be? My 302 w/ the Edlebrock Performer package, 600 CFM, a 1 inch spacer, and the scoop without the extension or w/ the extension? I think i am gonna try that clay idea, I'm just hoping that one of ya'll perhaps has some more experience doing this. Thanx ![]() Ok, just measured it, 5 1/2 inches from where the filter sits on the carb to the top of the hood, That caly trick worked BA!!!!

Do you have a 302 or 289?

I'm running a 347. When I had the 289 in the car I ran a Erson 500HLH cam with 318 Duration ,244@0.50, 538lift on In &Ex. I have always run the Victor JR and the 750CFM dull feed. The heads were highly worked over.
My friends '69 ran a Erson HI Flow II cam with a Performer intake with 600 cfm on a 302 with and Auto. The heads had so mild work done I think he had 20thousands cut of them. The car ran well and was enjoyable to drive. |

I just had a thought (must have been the 8th cup of coffee) an Eldebrock Air Gap intake may not be a bad fit I think it may be a little higher than the Performer and I think it is a duel plain design. It all depends on how far you want the scoop to stick out of the hood.
I forgot my friends '69 used 1/2 " spacer to get his hood to close. |

67Stang, thank-you for all of your help w/ this!
After looking and measuring everything I think I will run the 1" spacer, perhaps the edlebrock, that will reduce my carb to hood clearance to 4 1/2". The hood scoop is about 5 inches tall, so if I go w/ the second one that has the extension I should be able to trim and fine tune the tube so that the bottom of the opening of the scoop is just about flush w/ the hood. I can't wait I have always wanted a hood scoop w/ butterflies on it since I was a little kid I am still contemplating bumping up to a little bit bigger carb, I really may not need it though, I am pretty much stock except for the Edlebrock Performer package and Accel Ignition.... Ps - Your car sounds like a screamer and looks sharp too!!!!![]()

Sounds like you got a good game plan. I love the the butterflies too. I'm from PA and the Butterflies were very big up there on everything. I went with the 3" cowel hood to be a little different.
I have not run the car down here yet, getting the carb set right down here is a killer. My best past was done on a cool early fall night in PA at 10.31 at 131mph. I had the 4:62 gears in it and the M&H's on. |

butterflies, very old school
not a fan, IMO But, you'll almost have to trial/error it to find the right size spacer to get the scoop at the right height out the hood. |

I actually ordered everything today but the actual scoop. Summit should be sending all my new gear by Friday: 110GPH fuel pump, 6-9 psi fuel regulator,1 inch carb spacer (4 hole), & a driveshaft safety loop....
Once I get all of this poop on I am going to go w/ the scoop w/ the extension, this way I will be able to trim the tunnel ram to the exact point where the bottom of the scoop will be flush w/ the hood! Yay! New parts for the stanger!!!!!!! ![]()
