I may have a scanner that would work. I will have to go home and verify though. I think it works on 88-96 Ford. I used it on a 1995 F150 that had the 5.0 engine in it. Kid is right you plug it in and blinks out the error codes, then you cross reference in the book. I will check the toolbox tonight.

I don't know how to do it without a scanner. I have attached a pic of the scanner that I have. Here is a description.

* Ford & Lincoln-Mercury 1981-1995
* Accesses Ford's self-test system
*Audible and visual indicators
*Compatible with 1981 - 1995 Ford & Lincoln-Mercury vehicles
* Some 1994, 1995 and all 1996 and newer Ford vehicles are OBD II-equipped.

Here is the GM way for doing it. Not sure which pins would need to be shorted for a Ford.

On the aldl connector under the dash, short the "A" and "B" openings with a paper clip and read the flashes of the check engine light. A code 12 { one flash pause then 2 flashes} means the system is operating. Any other code will follow and is flashed 3 times. This works on all GM previous to '96
