the carwash place.
they have an option called "engine degreser" and that helps clean out old residue.

I had really good results using simple green.

Spray the Simple Green on a cold engine and let it set for 5 minutes to cut into all the grease, then hose off with a sprayer nozzle. After that start up the car and let it run for a few minutes. Wipe off residual water from plastic parts so you don't get those water spots, you can touch up with plastic conditioner (armor-all) too.

go to the car wash and fill up a empty gallon container (usually a empty milk jug) with the engin degreaser and take it home, put in a spray bottle and do it at home. itll be easier at home where you can use a brush to get scrubbing with

Is there anything under the hood that you should be careful not to get wet?

Put a large freezer bag over the dist and then put a rubber band in it to hold hit. Works great.

The only thing that I make sure I watch out for is the plug boots. If you spray the high pressure to close to them the water will travel underneath the boot and end up puddling down in the plug hole. That can cause all sorts of problems.

Once i have a house with a driveway to wash the car in the engine will be dried using my leaf blower, it works best of anything I've ever used.
