    Cluster swap

Got a guy with an '87 notch, that has the 85mph speedo, he bought this used '92 cluster with 140mph speed that supposingly works fine, anyhow he wants me to do the swap to the 140mph cluster. My main question is this a straight swap that everthing will work fine, or is there more involved?? Btw original V8 car.

you might have a fitment issue as the 87-89's had a slightly different cluster than the 90-93's. Other than that, it should be plug n play.

In short it will bolt in and the wiring harness will attach to it but I am pretty sure the wiring is different. Its only a couple of wires and is a pretty easy fix. I did one car a few years back and I think I had to lengthen a couple of wires versus untaping the harness and making a big mess with the dash in the car. The pins are really easy to get out of the connectors and swap around if you have a small pick or screw driver.

very cool, i was just gonna add that you need either a pre-air bag cluster for pre-airbag cars, or an airbag cluster for airbag cars, but with that diagram it should be easier.

Its the difference in how the harnesses are pinned out between the years. If you repin the earlier harness to accept the later cluster there should be no problems.

well i got the cluster swapped and guages work fine but have a problem. The only way i get the guage lights to turn on is by turning the dimmer switch fully on till the dome lights on. Reinstalled the previous cluster and does the same thing, any ideas? Healights, taillights work, its just the gauge lights and dash lights.....fuses are good, leaning towards the dimmer switch

another thing you could have tried is just removing the speedo its self (not the face plate, but the whole piece) and swaping them out that way so you wouldnt have to rerun wires (it was very simple for me to do).. when i swapped out my 85mph with a 140 thats what i did since i wasnt sure if any of the other gauges worked in the other cluster..

Dimmer switch is toast. An easy way to test it is to pull it out and use a DVM to chech the resistivity as you move the switch. If there is no change until just before it clicks to turn on the dome light then you have found your problem.
