code 18

anyone have this code before? its a continuos memory code. IDm circuit failure or SPOUT circuit grounded. some other website gave these definitions for code 18. (R) Check base timing & advance function -
(M) Ignition TACH signal erratic
I've replaced the Ignition Module(old one checked ok and new one did too at the Zone) and set timing, replaced plugs, new battery. i'm thinking of replacing the pick up coil as well (pip) and possibly changing out the ignition coil.

the car idles well but the exhaust sounds like its cammed and the car smokes pretty bad, running really rich. really weird cause under the hood the motor looks and sounds like its running fine no shaking or anything. but the exhaust sounds crappy and there is all that smoke. tomorrow i will check to make sure again that there is no ground to the spout and i will check timing again. really wierd thing is that the KOEO test passes with no problems (code 11) but continuous memory is still displaying code 18. this would be my last engine gremlin, then its off to restoring the rest of the car.

holly hell. i did the KOER test and i got like 6 codes.
12-rpm unable to achieve upper limit
21-ECT out of test range
22-map out of self test range
41-HEGO sensor circuit indicates system lean or no HEGO switching detected (right sensor
91-same as 41 but left sensor
33-EGR valve opening not detected

guess i know why i'm running really rich now. time to check and replace some of these. at least i'm getting closer. i'm going to start with the easier ones as some codes are thrown together. if you have any ideas on why they are bad let me know. maybe i'm missing something simple and taking the long way. i'm thinking they are just bad though. car did sit for 8 years or so (at least not registered that long)

ok got her fixed. idles well now. very little smoke. I have 1 bad o2 sensor though (code 91) and i have to fix the water pump (code 21, engine isn't at temp when i do the KOER test. i don't want to over heat the motor) and i have to find out why i'm throwing code 44 now. prolly cause it isn't up to temp (Thermactor air system inoperative-right side). either way the only important code is 91. car will run fine with 44 and 21 will fix with a water pump. Yay, she's slowly comming to life!!
