Yeah, that's about the same as I was saying about our house. It's 10 years old and is normally always on 76 (we don't even know how to program it yet), ceiling fans running, 12 or 14ft ceiling downstairs, and everything is electric (no gas).

Your parents probably have FELPS for their provider . They are under a long term contract with CPS and the rates have not went up even a fraction of what CPS users are paying . Once the contract is up , things will be a lot different . GVEC , from what I understand , is buying electricity from CPS as well but are not under the same contract as FELPS so the rates will sky rocket like CPS's rates have .

If so , they will get the hammer like the rest of us . My office building in is the La Vernia city limits so its FELPS and the rates are pretty decent , right now .

I figured someone would have thought that - you are the first to say it.

Tim its due to rates increasin and oil going up. Your parents dont have CPS and there rates went up like 40%. Steves parents went from 450 to 656...

Well, we just got this months bill and it was $213. That is with the thermostat at 76 at all times and a 2200sg ft house. It dropped $20 with us raising the thermostat 3 degrees.

lol... Jody said our AC is set at 77 normally and our house is only about 1450sqft and the bill was still 259. Though it stays really cool in here, sometimes so cool that I have to turn the AC up a degree or two.

What's weird is, it doesn't fill like 76 with the fans on. Carol still has to get a blanket sometimes in the evening while watching TV.

I'd say insulation of the house, and efficiency of your A/C system.

Your Mom's house also has a bunch of trees that block out the sun for a big part of the day, and newer neighborhoods do not

Yea they jacked it up on me as well...bill was 150 im used to 80-100 bucks......my secret is when im not here at the house it goes to 85.....im not cooling a empty house....period........when i get in put it on 76....its a new house cools quick.....saved me a ton of money........ac is the biggest eltric user in your house......also im running double style windows, house has 3 ceiling fans that i use just when im home....at night set it at 78, easier keep the house cool at night when the sun not beating down.....but yea i saved bunch on my bill by just turn the ac off or to 85 when no one is in the house... give it a try might make big difference.

to me, thats like how you get bad mileage in a car. it would be like 2 cars going 10 miles, side by side. one cruises at 10mph, the other goes 0-60mph, then 60-0mph, repeat process until the finish line. the one that kept the constant speed got alot better mpg's versus the floor, stop one. the A/C has to work hard over and over cycling and runs the energy demand alot higher than the constant one. does that make sence? i keep mine at 71* all day and turn it down to 68* at night. its comfortable all the time, and my bill is usually $120ish in the summer months for a 1500 sq ft house.

i know what your saying....but if its not running its not using electricity, so its not spending my money......im here just in the evening and lil in the mourning......so house is empty all day from 8-7 no one home.......get here when sun going down, kick ac on.....cools down quick, cycles off.....then it runs like normal during the night....i means thats 12 hours of the ac not running....its drop my electric bill in half compared to last year when used to run it 24-7 same temp never turn it off.......just cycle on off all day long......went to turning it off for 12 hours during the hottest part of the day....cut my bill in half.......helped me out.

Just an FYI on ceiling fans (and those who know me) I monitor the electricity usage in my house 24/7

A normal ceiling fans costs about 5 to 8 cents a day to operate, an energy star rated ceiling fans will only run about a penny a day no matter what size fan.

Running ceiling fans all day helps the a/c to an extent (keeps the air moving) but in no way will running 20 + ceiling fans equal the usage of an a/c running..
