Cylinder PSI

Well, I just ran a compression check on cylinders 1-4 and I got 1)95, 2)105, 3)102 and 4) 105
I haven't gotten to cylinders 5-8 yet but I know those numbers are real low. They should be at 130-170psi.
I may not be doing it right but thats what I got.
She does run good though after I put my new accell super stock wires on. So should I get a leakdown test now?

those numbers seem lil low.....but i read, that if you do a compressure test, your fine as long as all the numbers are within 10% of the lowest cylinder, i also read that a guy that had 140,000 miles on his 302 had 120-125 across the board, u figure u got a 289 original small block so im sure those numbers are correct for a motor of that age and wear.....couple threads stated that 130-150 is about right for a normal motor.....y are u running a compression test...do u have a problem or misfire?

They're really low. I looked up specs and they should be between 130-170psi.
and its defenately not within 10% hhaha.
I ran a compression test because she's not running like she should, all my plugs, carb, intake and everything are working good but she's just not running strong at all like she used to.

its either heads need rebuild, which could fix it, or the motor needsa freashen up.....just do both if u can, u get the compression back in the motor and the heads she'll make hell lot better hp than 122hp to the ground.....sucks to hear big time...or just drive it till it goes zero oil pressure or something goes crap on the inside......i'd just drive it till she dies , give ya tim eto save up and shop around...but if u got the cash/credit card drop a 302 long block and go for it, plus your'll be happier with something that more common motor, for parts and such that that 289......sorry im ramplin on but hey no bs stuff like some guys post up.....u got a nice ride and its getten there but motor differently needs some work or newer motor with those compression numbers.

yeah, I think the heads need to be rebuilt and the block bored out to get compression back. and that would be well over 1k just for machining and such.
its going to be cheaper for me to find a 302 which I've found a couple for $100-$350. I know the 289 can make more than 160hp with my setup now.
its cool, I'd rather have you post up a long reply with no bs than a short reply with bs.
i found this motor though...
302 motor

I think you should drop a 302 in it.

Yup those are low. You want to see something closer to 130-150 for a good tight motor. Now given the age and mileage on it you are probably in the ball park. I will say this dropping a 302 in it is not going to suddenly turn it in to a ground pounder. I well built 289 will make good power it is just yours is worn out.
Hell if you want to make it pull alot harder put a 351w in it and call it a day.

Bottom line Ryan is the 289 is high mileage and it isnt going to be a screamer unless you put some money into it and build it (or another motor) jesus son it is a 49 yr old car.

agreed... a 289 has a larger power band than the 302. Though the 302 makes great power low, it revs lower (stock).
Put money into the 289 and tighten it up, or drop a 351

Mine is a 289. Its big enough to get you down the road.

Alternately: I got an engine rebuild kit for Mother's Day one year, and had it together before too long. Had an Engine-Stuffing Party over the 4th of July one year ... and it is plenty powerful for what I want. It's not the 289, it's the mileage. She's tired and needs some TLC.

The kits are relatively cheap and the engine itself is worth the $200 that you'll drop into it to rebuild it ...

When are you being deployed? July 3rd? Leave it alone until you get back, hon. Then you'll have the money and time to play with it.

a rebuilt 289 with afr 165s, and a GOOD cam would get you down the road GREAT.

I dont know what carb and intake you have, but you could do a demon 650 with an rpm intake a little bigger cam. would SCREAM in your car.

Just to give you an idea, Jeremy in austin, who now has an ls1 in his 86... Had the demon 650 a descent size lunati cam and afrs with LTs. it made 360 at the wheels and around 540 on the bottle with stock block. I can PM you some videos of that car on the street, I know i cant post them here.
