    Engine codes

How do you find out what year of car your engine was origainally in? And if it's a hipo or not, 2v or 4v? My car was originally a 200 in line 6 and is now a 289. Just want to find out as much about it as I can. Thanks

The casting numbers on the block are near the starter, on the heads, the casting numbers are on the underside of the heads near the push rod holes and on the intake the casting numbers are on the top of the intake infront of the carb flange. Chris/Racer 99 has posted links to casting numbers on here before, I have a couple of books that have casting numers, the link Chris provided was to a site that coppied the info that is in one of the books I have. '63 to '65 are the better heads, as for the block, you will want a late '65 or newer, so it will have a 6 bolt bellhousing, the 5 bolt bellhousings are hard to find, I don't think they are as strong and are worth more money to collectors.
The current combo is an '85 coupe with 302 bored and stroked to 364, Ported Twisted Wedge heads and a BXR intake, A9M ECM with a Moates chip, Doug Nash 5 spd, 4.56 gears, Hoosier 275/60/15 drag radials.
Daily driver '89 GT 302 stock block, crank, rods and pistons, ported GT-40P heads with stock valves, Ported Explorer intake, B302 cam, Z spec T5, 3.73 gears, Moates chip and no traction. Made 325 whp and 325 wtq.
