engine rebuild

i will be getting a backup shortblock so i can test the roots blower with confidence. later this week i may pick it up and i want to basically play mechanic with it and rebuild it. where is a good how-to site for a rebuild, or can someone guide me?

if i can find heads and intake for cheap or free i'd like to get it in "ready" mode should my stock motor go kaput.

i know i need to invest in an inch-lbs tq wrench, but what else?

btw it's a '94 v6 shortblock with 80k miles on it.

thanks.

Austin,

you're more than welcome to borrow any tools of mine. i've got an Inch-lbs torque wrench.

You might want to invest in the cam sensor tool or talk to brad about the "brad" method of installing it correctly.

i've got a Ford shop manual for an 01 Mustang that I "borrowed" from the dealer i worked at. you can borrow that too.

i can't, i am committed already with some other guys in making a supercharger kit for v6 mustang. i can't say i haven't thought about it though! or put the 2.3l i was talking about in her and turbo. it'd be just too much work, i just need a backup i can drop in and have it driveable asap.

i think so. it'd circumvent you having to buy a special service tool.

here is my goal:

1) to get it running, and well
2) to improve performance WHERE CONVENIENT (aka where i can do it myself and cheaply)

i have:

'94:
shortblock needing new pistons, rods are good to go, cam good, all of that intact
u/l intakes
one good head (other one was shitty and threw away)
crank pulley, water pump pulley, water pump, harmonic balancer
misc. stuff i don't know what it is.

should i take the shortblock apart first and have someone look at it and inspect it? what do they measure, warpage of cyl walls, thickness of cyl walls, or what?

ps - kyle is my new bestestest friend evar!

that depends on alot of things.

a shortblock is more than just looking at the bare block.

and even still you can really split hairs looking things over.

i'd check for bore taper (make sure the cylinders don't have a slight conical shape) for sure.

make sure the crank bore is straight

check for cracks.

check the deck for warpage

then check the crankshaft: make sure it is straight and doesn't have any runout.

check the rods to make sure they are straight, etc...

i'm sure i'm leaving some things out...
