engine tapping

I bought a '95 mustang with a 351. The care only has 40,000 miles so the engine has done a lot of sitting. i have had several problems mostly being dry-rotted hoses and gaskets. the other day when i was driving and i downshifted a loud tapping noise started coming from the engine. ive pulled it apart and the push rods look fine. the noise doesnt get louder as i accellerate so i dont thinks it a bearing. the only other thing it might be is a collapsed lifter. i was just wondering if any of yall might have any other ideas?

One time my suv was making a taping noise and it turned out my harmonic balancer was falling apart. It made the noise for a few weeks before it finally came apart on me.I had spent a lot of time trying to figure out what it was, then it broke one day while I was driving. These 5.0's are known for balancers breaking and even ruining the engine because of that. I hope that helps. -JM

if you've got the intake off, check the lifters... and/or replace them... you can find lifters (i'm talking about hydraulic rollers) for really cheap... i've got 2-3 sets for less than $100. check that ballancer too. if all of those seem ok, it's time to get a stethescope and see where it's coming from.

If it has done alot of sitting Im betting it is a stuck lifter.
Fire it up withthe v/c's off and see if 1 rocker isnt moving or is loose while it is running.

i thought it was the lifters too, but there was a mild tap coming from them so i replaced all 16, and that wasnt too long ago. Do they require break in time?
