engine too strong

so i was talking to a guy in one of my classes up at school the other day, and we started talking about cars and junk, and he mentioned to me that ford made an engine for like NRA or something but it was too powerful and they were disqualified. he told me the name was the 427 sideoiler. just wondering if yall had anything else to add on to this because i found that real interesting.

i think they just made the oil passages bigger for better cooling and mechanical valve tappets. basically it was NASCAR's crack

True.

" The SOHC 427 represents the ultimate development of the FE engine. By eliminating the rpm barrier of pushrods and lifters, the engine could run easily at 8100rpm and hit 9000rpm for short periods. The hp curve was practically a straight line up to 7000rpm, and in an 8V version reached 700hp. A dual overhead cam version was planned, but never developed, as NASCAR once again squelched this ultra high performance gem from Ford."

A side oiler is not always a SOHC,
but a SOHC is a side oiler.

The SOHC had cams in the cylinder heads like the 4.6-5.4

Look at the difference in the cylinder heads on the Mustang
and the dragster vid I post.

SOHC

Mustang 427 SIDE OILER

The 427 SOHC was the first engine to break the 200 mph barrier in the 1/4 mile. Awesome engine. It was outlawed in NASCAR which it was originally developed for. Ford ended up using the 427 Tunnel Port which was no slouch either.

The tunnel ports did not last long because they had a problem cracking heads. That's one of the reasons for built the 429s and 460s, they needed an engine that was competive with the Hemi, cheeper to build than the tunnel ports, SOHCs and more durable. The 427 SOHC's were rated at 625 hp with two Holley four barrel engines from the factory. Ford was suppose to install them in the 64 Galaxie but stopped when NASCAR banned them. You could order them from any Ford dealer, but they cost more than a 427 Galaxie. It's been a long time since I read the stories on this engine but, I think the 427 Galaxie was like $3800 new and the 427 SOHC was like $7000 new in the crate. Complete with pan, distributor, wires, intake, carbs and exhaust manifolds designed to fit the Galaxie. I had a friend that was an FE nut, who found a SOHC many years ago that had never been run that was suppose to be one of AJ Foyts back up engines, the guy that had it wanted $25000.I would love to get my hands of a SOHC, then bore, stroke it, custom cams, mild port work and them put it in a '69 Mach with a TKO behind it, convert it to port fuel injection.
