Exhaust Question

I've see a lot of adds that state that the exhaust "is dumped". I'll show my ignorance here, but what exactly does that mean and what advantage does it provide?

Thanks!

Means no tail pipes "Dumped" (turn downs) just out of muffler.
No real advantage except loud and noisy to ride in the car. Just my .02

A dumped exhaust is when there is no tail pipes beond the mufflers. Basically there is a short pipe (6-10") on the outlet of the muffler. Usually the pipe has a downturn to direct the exhaust to the ground. I don't really know of any advantage other than is is much loader in the cabin of the car because the exhaust noise is directly under the car. Probably less back pressure.

... and "can" fail inspections since it doesn't let exhaust leave the car safely (fumes can build up in the car).

yea, on a hatchback style car, it has to go all the way to either the back or side of the vehicle... on a coupe, however, you can dump it under the trunk...

IMO dumps only on 5.0 gt's and lx coupes, but full catback tailpipes on lx hatches, sn95's, new edge, and beyond. Just my 2cents

negative-
loud loud loud inside. Girls wont like it, you cant talk on your phone, you have to crank the radio waaay up. god forbid you get stuck on the freeway in a "droning" rpm.

plus, it sounds mean as hell from the outside. Looks absolutely awesome on an sn95 since they have a flat clean bumper.

Ya i had no idea that it was illegal when i did it to my car a few months ago had to go 30 miles to find a hole in the wall inspection place that doesnt check exhaust to get mine passed... Also it is very loud in the inside as well as the outside but im always jamming out so i just drown it out with the 12" memphis

a truck may have the exhaust dumped under the bed UNLESS it has a camper shell on it, not a toneau cover, but a raised cover that allows room for passengers... and as far as dumped after the rear axle, in a coupe, yes.. in a hatch, no because the trunk is still technically part of the passenger compartment... not trying to be a dick but i do know what i'm talkin' about here, i JUST went through state inspector school a few weeks ago and that was a big topic of "well what if" in the class...

Thanks for all the feedback. I'm not too old, at least not yet, but I do like a quiet interior.

Well I am old and my car is plenty loud (as most of you know) I do however like to be able to at least hear myself talk and hear others in the car.
There is a difference between loud and obnoxious.
