Exhaust question.....

I have a hooker off-road x pipe that I bought over 3 months ago that im finally going to put on. I seen people talk about the the s197 and say that different types of o/R pipes (x and h) go with different types of mufflers (straight or chambered). Im going to be running the stock mufflers for a bit but after that what type of mufflers should i get. I dont want them to drone but i also dont want them to be soft i.e. magnaflows. Every s197 i hear with magnaflows is really soft almost like stock. Also are the stock mufflers straight or chambered??

stock mufflers will be chambered... straight through will usually be really loud... i.e. slp's etc etc.. your best bet is to find clips online to get an idea

thanks david. I have listened to clips but i wanted some opinions from real people since the vids can be distorted. I dont have the money to try different combos, so i need to get it right the first time around. are magnaflows straight or chambered... what goes best with an xpipe

im a flowmaster guy. however, my buddy that had a 3V saleen had an O/R x pipe and the stock magnaflows and it sounded smooth. id suggest some quieter straight throughs like the magnaflows.

Either way you go with mufflers they won't net you squat with HP...even if they do maybe a couple extra horsies thats it.

I have X-pipe with flowmasters (40 series). They are chambered and I really do not like the sound. Way too raspy but I just live with it until I find a good deal on a Borla setup.
Try and go single chambered if at all possible to reduce pressure the exhaust gases get running through the chambers...especially with the x-pipe. Borla really sounds nice with less raspiness and a deeper tone

I seem to remember the stockers are chambered (not real sure though)

normal rule of thumb is that if you run an x-pipe, get straight through mufflers. (magnaflows, borla, etc)

if you run an h-pipe, get chambered. (flowmasters, mac, etc)

if you mix it, like mentioned above, it will be very raspy or just not sound good.

Believe it or not they are Magnaflows but the race type straight through design. Stainless steel. I paid like $70 for each one from Summit racing then had my friend from CD tire and Muffler install them. He charged me like $100.00 but he ran the mufflers forward of the rearend like on the 99-04 stangs. I am also running ARH LT's ARH Catted Xpipe.

So is it still axle back or was it welded in? Im understanding what you mean by rearend like the 99-04 stangs.

They are welded in right after the Xpipe in front of the rearend and after the axle is just tailpipes like the 99-04 Mustangs. I did this to get rid of that raspy sound that the 05's and up give off from having the mufflers attached to the tips. I believe Dean from PSI also did this to his car. Remember though that you probably can't get anything other than a straight through muffler design to fit in front of the Rear end. I don't think a chambered muffler will fit. This is the exact muffler I have. If you run it without Cats it will be louder than mine.

cool that sounds good, so its welded at a point that i would take the x pipe off and put the stock h back on if needed? Or is is permanent. Yeah i dont want a chambered either, id perfer straight

No! Actually it clamped at the X pipe so you can remove it and put your H pipe and back and fourth. Where the mufflers are welded is a little further down line. I guess it is like having flow tubes between the muffler and X pipe welded on muffler side and clamped to the Xpipe side.
