First Passes of 2008

Went to HRP Sunday to finish my license passes. I think it went pretty well.

1st Pass off the trailer

60ft 1.415
330ft 4.059
1/8 6.313@108.73
1000ft 8.283
1/4 9.952@134.85

2nd
Ummm 12 something. Forgot to shift when the little light came on and hit the rev limiter at 9k

3rd
60ft 1.417
330ft 4.065
1/8 6.325@108.80
1000ft 8.294
1/4 9.967@134.32

4th and new personal best
60ft 1.418
330ft 4.057
1/8 6.302@109.38
1000ft 8.263
1/4 9.927@135.25

Nice way to begin a season, but I ran into some brake issues on the last run and as you will see in the video. The tires need a little more clearancing. On the last run I have NO idea what the noise is at the end. I didnt hear it in the car.

I noticed that you use the name Rex 331, I would assume your engine was a 331 and is now a 347? So are you still using in a 3.25 stroke crank and what is your engine combo, trans and gear. I have a 364 with a 3.4 stroke crank, I thought about going with the 3.25 stroke, but desided to go with the 3.4 to make a little more power and to make up for the fact that I used a heavy Eagle crank instead of a light weight Crower or Sonny Bryant crank that I wanted to use.

Was a 331. Went 10.50@128 like that. Did a little more port work to the heads, actually fixed the fucked up job TEA did put it in a dart block with a 4.125 bore but kept the 3.25 stroke. Bumper compression up to 14.6:1 vs 13.5:1 of the 331 and turned it up from 7600rpms to 8000. Here is the complete combo

Dart Block 4.125 bore
3.25 stroke Crank Internally Balanced
Probe Lightweight I beam rods
JE custom pistons 14.6:1 compession
Ported TW Heads Flow
Flow numbers for the heads
200 300 400 500 600 700
I 160 218 272 304 310 313
E 93 133 165 188 208 218
1.6 Probe Rockers with RGM 1 piece stud girdle
Custom Grind Solid roller 279/285@.050 .704/704 108
ISKY Red Zone Solid Roller Lifters
Ported Super Victor Intake w/ 1" spacer
BIGS 950 Stage 7
KOOKS 1 7/8 headers with Evac System
UCC 8" convertor with a 6500 stall and a few other tricks.
Dynamic M2 C-4 with a modified Direct Drive drum to handle the high rpms
4.56 gears
Car weighs 2985 with me in it.

I thought your combo was probly close to mine. You are turning more rpm because of the shorter stroke and smaller engine. I think my car will run very close to the number your car is running once I get all of the bugs worked out. So far the car has gone a best of 10.21 at 131.51 with only a 1.51 60'. The car has gone a 1.478 on radials and 1.4706 on 10.5X28 M/T ET Drags. The 1.47 60's were done with 3.90 gears, I have changed to 4.30s and the 60's have slowed down the best currently after a lot of work is a 1.51. The car was only running 10.41 at 128 when and was making about 50 hp less at the wheels then. I am going to change back to a set of 4.10s to hopefully get my 60's back into the 1.40s. My combo is a EFI 364.
4.135 bore
3.4 stroke eagle crank
5.4 H beam rods
Ported Twisted Wedge heads
Ported BXR intake
custom cam with comp cam lobes
254 in. / 264 ex.
.672 lift in. and ex.
208 intake center line 208 LCA
1.6 com rockers
1 7/8" Kooks headers
90mm TB and 92mm MAF
C4 trans with trans brake
10" convertor 4500 rpm stall that is actualy stalling to 5100 rpm.
The car was around 2840 with me in it, but should be around 2930 now, I added some weight and have not weighed it since.
had 3.90 gears currently have 4.30 gears, going back to 4.10 or possibly back to 3.90 gears.

Who ported your heads? I assume since its a street car your running on pump gas? Your cam in similar to my old 331 cam. Well in lift. It was an off the shelf cam. Its nice to get one of those when ya ask for a custom one.

My heads would probably have better numbers on a different bench, but the bench they were flowed on is known to be pretty stingy on its numbers. The big bores definately help out TW heads.

There is a posibility when I get my front struts fixed I am gonna step up to 4.88 gears. What kind of power did you put down at the rear wheels? Last time mine was on the dyno. It was putting down like 472rwhp, but at the time I didnt know my timing pointer was off, so who knows what its making now.

The las time on the dyno it made 459 hp, I don't know about the torque numbers. Previous best was 408 lbs of torque peak. This last time on the dyno it made 559 peak torque. I don't know why it spit out the torque numbers it did. To give you an idea what my results have been. When the car ran 395 hp and 406 lbs of torque at the wheels, it ran 127 to 128 mph at the track. When I fixed a few problems it made 422 hp 408 lbs of torque to the wheels, it ran 129 mph at the track. On this last trip it did 459 hp and 559 lbs of torque at the wheels after fixing a few more things, it ran 131 mph at the track. So I think the hp is close to correct, but the torque numbers have got to be wrong. I was not able to tune the car completely on this last trip, because the wide band on the dyno, I was on was not calibrated yet. So I was using my O2 sensor readings to tune it. I tuned it rich by my O2s because the are in the collectors and I am not sure how accurate they are that far down stream. The other problems that I know I had when I last tuned it were, first I did not have enough points in my MAF curve in the range where the car was running at WOT. So I was able to get the AFR close to where I wanted it at each point in the MAF curve, that were in the range the engine was running, but inbetween those points in the MAF curve it was going way rich. I also found that I was only running 30 degrees total timing, I am going to try to finnish tuning it this weekend i hope. I would bet it should pick up 20 to 25 hp once everything is right.
I ported the heads and intake, I also cooked up the cam specs. I had a set of 1 3/4" headers and a 3" exhaust system on the car previously that I had built, that worked very well. I was having trouble getting the car to hook on the radials and desided it was a result of the extra torque I was making with the 1 3/4" headers. When I changed to a set of 1 7/8" headers in the engine simulator that I use, it was indicating it would loose a lot of torque in the lower part of the power band and pick up about 17 hp on top, so I changed my exhaust to try to get the car to work. The power at that point hardly changed at all at the peak and I still had serious traction problems. It took a long time to get the car to finaly hook up with the 4.30 gears. For a long time after switching to the 4.30s the car usualy would run mid 1.60 60's and occationaly would run high 1.50 60's. I have finaly gotten it to regularly run lower 1.50 60's.

So what all is involved in getting your license and what does it cost? I have heard many different stories on this. I know there is two ways to get the license, but I am just curious what is involved and cost when you don't go to one of the drag racing schools. I will probably need to get a license before the end of the year. I know I will have to step up to a 10 point cage, window net, better jacket, ect. So I am not looking run 9s just yet, I will be happy to run 10.0s for a while. I know the car will be down for a while when the cage is being installed, the six point I have now took seven months to get done. Getting a cage or roll bar done in this area takes a while. There is either a long wait to get the car in or it will sit there for a long time before it is finaly finnished.

Thats not bad. I heard that anyone that already has a license can sign off on your runs? So does NHRA send you the info for the license when you by the memebership?
