fuel problem

I just installed a walbro 255 fuel pump in my 02 gt stang and everything was good until i went to fill up on gas a day later. I got a check engine light for DTC P0453 (Evaporative Emission Control System Pressure Sensor High Input). I checked all the hoses I could see with the tank still installed. Why didnt I get the check engine when I finished the installation and fired it up? It came on after I filled up the tank half way 1 day later. what could be causing this problem? do I need to retune to the new pump? is it bad to drive it like that?

You could have left the gas cap loose.

nope - a tune is not necessary - I have the focus SVT pump (I believe it is also rated around 255LPH) and never had any issues with it. Are you sure the walbro pump you bought is a returnless fuel pump? you probably already know there is a difference between return style and returnless....

Somewhere along the way, you have an EVAP hose loose or leaking. Either the fuel filler neck grommet is broken (not creating a tight seal), gas cap, (which you checked), or the lines to the filler neck are off, (the over flow).

Unless you pinched the seal that goes from hat to tank.

In short of dropping it again, there is also a vent on the top with a single skinny hose, that could also be off. It is in front of the pump.

Ill have to check it all again. I may have to drop the tank again. I bought this pump from a fellow member here on the site. he said it was for his 01 gt. is there a chance that this pump could be a return style pump? I know I need a returnless style pump. Could that be a possibility? that I may have installed a return style pump. both my old stock pump and new walbro pump looked the exact same, just that the Walbro was a tad longer. if it is a return style pump, can it mess anything up?

Oh, and the fuel fill neck gromet is brand new. While removing the filler neck from the tank, I tore the old grommet. I got a new one from a local dealership.

The 255 pumps are longer, even Chevy pumps work. Most replacements are either or. No worries for the return style. Mine is actually a return system, but I have a returnless pump.

so, the DTC code P0453 should have nothing to do with the pump? it has to be some thing with the tank, vent tube or filler neck, right? F**k it, Ill drop it again tomorrow. thanks jody.

Yup, check the easy stuff, check the lines to the filler pipe just behind the fender. otherwise, it may be on the top, but if I were you, I'd drive it til you had about a 1/4 tank left and then drop it.

And a little tip, NEVER NEVER let it get to less the 1/8th tank, that pump will suck the sump dry and you WILL stall.

Been there, done that, and now I usually fill up when I know I have about 20-30 miles left before the stall, which is usually about 1/8th tank for me.

Funny thing is, I just now actually read the code. Very possible one of the pins or a connector at the pump hat is loose or damaged.

It does not relate to a EVAP leak like I assumed.

Normally, you would get like a p0455 or relating.....

Check the wiring connections. You may just have a bum FTP sensor.

Outside...

Your pump should be sender and pump as a unit unlike mine...

The top of the pump hat, there should be 2 connectors or 1 ??

there is 2. one of them is right under the rear bumper easy to access but the other is right on top of the tank.. so, does it have anything to do with the pump? or could it still be a loose vent tube?

Sounds more electrical to me....

based on the code and the meaning, it sounds like a sensor issue. The rail sensor may be whack now too due to the increase in pressure. Without scanning the data, it is hard to say.

today I ended up dropping the tank again and taking the Walbro 255 pump out because it is a return style fuel pump. I ran over to southway Ford and bought me a brand new returnless style SVT Focus 255 pump and installed it today. now I just need some adapters to install some 24# injectors I have laying around.
anybody know what kind I need? and who sells them? the injectors are off an 03 Mach 1.

I think I may have some, let me check. But if I were you, I'd sell them and get the EV1 style versus the EV6 (pencil types).

Much easier to sway and will look less like shit IMO.
