thanks everone just what i needed to know
also does it throw the speedometer off
yea the sct will fix the speedo recal
yeap sure did it feels differant then the stock ones....
Difference in gas mileage or how they feel?
At 60mph and 80mph it's about a 170 rpm difference, so not bad at all. But the difference in acceleration is immediately noticeable and if you are running any kind of performance camshaft, you will definitely like the 4.10's.
Where are you getting yours done? I'm looking for a shop to do mine right now.
I'll be going to Maximum Velocity for mine... I have 373's in the mail right now on the way to the house. Gotta make a trip back up to Cincinnati for a week, but when I get back, they're going on![]()

Do you have manual tranny or SC? I had an 82 GT with 4.10 gears and it was a freakin' rocket on the street with only a little over 300hp. I've heard 3.73s are better suited for SC apps or manual trannys and 4.10s are better for auto trannys if you are keeping it NA (which I intend to do...SC is just too expensive and NOS can destroy an engine too fast if you abuse it).
BTW, we'll have to compare when you get yours in. Mine should be done by Saturday![]()
The part about autos needing 4.10s and manuals needing 3.73s. Its BS...
And my gas mileage was 25mpg with 4.10s... I havnt really noticed any change in GM from going to 4.10s to 3.73s except the lack of any balls at all in the car.
PPL are afraid of 4.10s because of false information... Unless your trapping over 115 with a 3650 tranny (110 with a t45) 4.10s should be your first option...
PPL also hate 4.10s because they are to stupid to build their suspension and get good tires to use the added torque multiplication of the ratio..
i cant say i noticed much of anything with my 373's in gas or performance really. it has a little better bottom end torque but not really noticeable.
getting there
h&r ss springs, kyb shocks&struts, 17x9 and 17x10.5 03 cobras, bbk catted x with borla stingers, sct tune and 3.73's.
gear swaps in the fox bodies were much more noticeable as you were going from 2.73 to a 3.73. The last two generation of mustangs would have the 3.27 or even 3.55 and the jump wasn't that noticeable.

I think if you see a big change in gas mileage its because you're foot is heavier like most of us are after a gear upgrade.
LOL you need to do some serious reading on rear end gear ratios.
The higher the number of the gear, the less speed you will be able to obtain, due to physically running in higher RPMs. BUT, the theoretical speed lost is not always obtainable anyways due to a mustangs piss poor aerodynamics anyways. To overcome the aerodynamics issue you need to add more power.
4.10's would be better....

I don't know if I would call it a rule as much as just a rule-of-thumb, but it certainly exists for a reason. A 4R70W has a first gear of 2.84, where the T-3650/T-45 have a considerably steeper 3.38/3.37.
To get about the same acceleration out of both, 4.10s for the auto and 3.73s for the 5-speed are a nice step up without being too radical.
My first Mustang was a 1990 GT with the AOD which had a 2.40 first gear. Combined with the 2.73 rear end you could exceed the 55mph speed limit just about red line in 1st gear. Sigh.
