I bought some 3.73s off the classifieds here... took them to get installed... then got a call from the shop telling me the car already ahd 3.73s in it (previous owner didnt tell me)... fortunately the shop had some 4.10s and they traded me...

My car is is a '98GT 5-speed, 99% stock - nothing special... but the 3.73s left me wanting more... sure you loose a little mileage-wise but its more than made up for in "fun-factor"... On the highway I run ~2500rpm @ 70mph and I still get ~18mpg.

just my $0.02

I'm gonna put some 4.10s in the next month or so - just wondering what gadgits are out there to correct speedo? I'm probably going with the Dallas Mustang Speed Cal module that they sell. I think it runs for like $80 bucks. It's probably the way to go with-out spending more $$ on a custom tune. What do you think?

Do you already have a tune? If so it shouldn't cost much to correct for the gears. If not I would just wait and spend the money on a custom tune that way you have the tuner for future mods...

I think the big question for the OP is how much time do you spend on the highway above 55mph?? I run 3.73s on my vert and I do ok on the highway and you still have a really nice pull in 5th... I can't imagine doing a lot of highway driving with 4.10s... Just my opinion... And i can't wait to get my 3.73s in my 03!!!!

nah - don't have a tune and not sure if I'll get a tune anytime soon - that's why I'm thinking about getting DM speedcal for now. I very rarely get on highway with stang.

if your car is a 98 dont u use a speedo gear to correct it? i thought it was the new edges that had the electronic gauges. i wanna say the older sn's use a speedo gear.

Sorry for causing the semi-hijack/confusion guys...

Seco - I picked up a used DM speedcal on the classisfieds to use on mine. It works just fine. installation is easy. It took me a little longer to get mine set right, because my car already had a speedo gear compensating for 3.73s then I put in the 4.10s and it was Waayy off... took a little fiddling with the dip-switches to get the ratio right, but no problems now.

sooooo
3:73's : top end power (good for dumping it on 1st wont break loose like 4:10's will)Good for hwy driving
4:10's : low end power (good for spinning tires frm 1st) suck for hwy driving

Not looking at gears for my car but, are my observations right? im new at the gears thingy jigger

So if i was looking to get gears for a 4.6 ran motor and me that i drive alot on the highway frm N.E side of town to the N.W side of town....i should consider getting 3:73s?
Thanks

The gear swap was a good sotp improvement in acceleration, but it wasn't spectacular. I guess I had read all the hype of how 4.10s were amazing, but I didn't find that to be true. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad I got the 4.10s. My car is much funner (?) to drive because of them.

I don't know about your car, but on my car (with the 3650 transmission), 75 mph = about 2500 rpm - that is not too high for me.

No Adrian, get the 2.73's for you in a 8.8 diff. I have a set here waiting for you in my garage, come get them.

For the record, 99 was the year Ford switched over to the electronic speedo with digital odometer. 96-98 is still electronic, being that the speedo is driven by the VSS sensor (not a cable) it is still manipulative with a module. 99+ can be configured with a hand held tuner.
