GPS

I would like to but some sort of a portable GPS. The question is should I just get something like a nice TomTom or get a new cell phone with GPS. My phone is pretty old & my contract in up with sprint. I think that the new Samsung Instinct from sprint has GPS with turn to turn & speaker. What do you guys think??? I would like to keep it under $450.00

with phone GPS, you pay for a phone that can do that as well as a monthy fee to use it. In the long run, a TomTom would pay for itself.

My wife and I both have TomTom's and we have no complaints. In fact, they are easy to use, in expensive, and look sleek..

the navigon makes a really cool one that has 3d imaging....other than that any tom tom or garmin will be good...the more features you want the more it cost. Any where from 99 bucks up to 500 bucks. good place to check out is buy.com

I would not rely on a phone. My phone has GPS through Verizon, and it is nice, but on our recent trip being in BFE drained my battery and I needed to buy a car charger, so you would have been out of luck with a dead phone. Plus I would think it would be inconvenient to use it for anything else while in the GPS function....Jeff got a Magellan for Christmas that is super nice, you can buy other ones of course, but I think your phone and GPS should be separate!!

it has 3d imaging but not like the navigon the navigon has a different type called reality view, which is alot better than the 3d imaging that the tom tom has IMO....whats the max you want to spend and i can find a good unit for you. They all have lower end models that start aroudn 100 and can go all the way to 500+

Remember Ray that the Navigon's "reality view" is A. Not exactly what you see, it close but not exact, and B. does NOT work at all intersections

I have the instinct and although i have not used the GPS yet...it has a hard time finding me during bad weather when i use applications like LIve search that relies on the GPS signal to even work..maybe its because I have not actually completely signed up for the GPS service i dunno but it still should find me either way.

second note my tom tom one is really easy to use...has its ups and downs lie everything else but gets the job done as long as you have "somewhat' of an idea of where you are going...but what pisses me off about it is the voice commands are confusing. It will say things like "enter ramp on left and go left" im like WTF?! cuz to me that means i have to take a left on the highway...but the tom tom means to get all the way in the left lane...just something to get used to i guess

def. go with the separate equipment, I got a Garmin for Christmas, when the portable GPS's came out I thought it was a waste of money, I could not be happier that I have one now, its even fun to use in the city... mine doesn't have this, but if one does it would be even more awesome... the ability to find phone numbers for destinations

that is one cool feature of the Instinct...when searching for a spot through live search, you get the map, GPS directions, address, phone numbers, social security numbers of the people that work there, etc...but i just havent tested its effectiveness like i said, maybe ill play with it tomorrow

Remember the GPS in phones is whats called GPS-A, which means assisted, so if you have no signal the GPS won't work either

stay away from 3D imaging, you are paying alot more money for it, when you can get a TomTom One about 1/3rd the price, and it does everything the same ontop of being more user friendly.
