GT40P's and Header Choices

What other short tube headers besides the P-style headers offered from FMS and MAC can be used without bashing the crap out of them? I have no problem with custom wires and I even seen these plug extenders that seem like they may help some. I would like to use the headers I have if possible. Of course if I run out of options ill just bend over and get the FMS headers. Personal experiences wanted....

Im not going to run long tubes. I need options for short tubes. I have a spark plug socket for the 4.3L Blazer's that I think will work out good if the headers will allow me a nut hair of room.

I know several have had sucess just using a shorter spark plug. Not sure of the p/n for it though.

Here is an article about them. Seems that the shorty plugs are pricey at 10.00 - 12.00 each!!

StangPro.com - Ford's GT-40P Cylinder Head

Here is an excerpt from the link above:

Spark plug is moved down and rotated out placing the electrode closer to the center of the combustion chamber. This provides a better and more complete burn. Not only does this help performance but it also reduced emissions. Note: The GT-40P's don't use standard 5.0L plugs. You must use plugs for a 98+ Explorer/Mountaineer V8 or for a Cobra/Lightning equipped with iron GT-40 heads!! Forget about the shorty plugs (Accel p/n P526S). I've heard they're close to $10 each for this application! Plug specs are: 14mm thread, 0.708" projection, tapered seat, resistor plug. Thanks to Derek Hyde for the Accel plug specs!!. The 2000 FRPP catalog lists a Motorcraft AWSF-32C. I bought Champion Truck Plugs p/n 4013 (I used the Truck Plugs on a '97 V8 Dakota I had and was happy with them. Thought I'd try 'em again.)

I've ran some GT-40 P heads in the past, used some bbk shorties. I think one or two wires come real close to the header.

other than the MAC and FRPP, i dont know any shorties off hand that will work. the thing to look for is a primary tube that draws straight enough away from the head to give you some room for the offset spark plug angle. if you already have unequal length shorties and can weld headers youself, just extend the primaries out an inch and a half or so and you should be good. cut down a spark plug socket similar to the LS1 shortie socket, and run some 90 degree plug wires. you dont need to buy the expensive short spark plugs, just the standard 14mm, .708 reach, explorer (and i think even LS1) spark plug will work as long as the headers draw far enough away for the plug boots. a short plug socket is a must-have for plug changes though.

personally, i run BBK LT's, autolite 104's, and some Taylor 90 degree wires.

Good info. I have some BBK shorties that I think I will try. I will be able to modify them if need be. The short plugs are definately out.

Does the LS1 spark plug socket have a part# that I can take to my tool dealers to see if they sell one?

I just cut mine with a grinder and a dremel.. this ebay link could help you get the idea without me going to take pics of my own setup.

eBay Motors: LT1/LS1 Short Spark Plug Socket Free Replacement 1-1/2" (item 320052878301 end time Nov-29-06 10:06:54 PST)

and if that link doesnt work, check out ebay and look for item number 320052878301

Thanks for the link. I looked in my snap on catalog and they sell some specialty plug sockets that are pretty short. One is 1 1/16" long.

Now this may help where wires are really close to the header tubes. There a little pricey but if only one or 2 are needed it wont hurt too much.

Exhaust Header. WrenchRat SparkArm MOVES spark plug wires away from exhaust header heat.

all the shorties will work persay

Just not the equal length. Get some MSD 90 degree plugs so you dont burn wires and shorten the socket and you are set.

I have some BBK shorties that look like they will work OK. What is the part# or link to the wire set I need?
