Harmonic Balancer???

What exactly does it do and if my car shakes a bit would that have anything to do with it? Like always... thanks in advanced for the help.

a harmonic balancer is connected to the crankshaft to reduce vibration... so yes, it would cause the car to shake.. when my friends harmonic balancer went out it would only shake when idling.. when he revved up it wasn't so bad... they're not THAT hard to install.. took us about 45 minutes to an hour to replace...

Same here. During idle and low RPM only, the car would shake.

A lot of times, if you open the hood and watch it, you can actually see it wobbling while the car is running, or if you grab the outter ring, you will be able to move it.

Yep...I changed mine out a couple of months ago. The car started shaking around 2200RPM. Rent a puller from Autozone. Remove the radiator fan for clearance. R&R the Harmonic Balancer. Should take you about an hour.

"rent a puller"? Will I need that to get the part off? How much is it to rent?

Yeah...autozone has a loaner program. You pay, I think $15 for the puller (to get the harmonic balancer off), and get your $15 back when you return it. You'll definitely need the puller in order to get the HB off.

Yes...it shook my entire drivetrain when mine went bad.

You can get under the car and rub your finger around the face of the balancer. If you feel the rubber bushing protruding out of any part of the balancer, then you know it's bad. It'll save you time just in case it's not the balancer.

One more question...

You could have worn or busted motor mounts too, bad plugs, wires, misfire, vacuum leak... the list goes on...
Do what they mentioned, go under the car, look at the balancer, see if the outer ring has slipped, or the rubber is missing any pieces, or coming out. You can also remove the balancer and start the engine to see if it is gone... if it is still there, you have other problems. If i remember correctly, no oil will come out either. I am not a 5.0 guy, I am more a modular guy, but I remember working on those....

No... The engine vibration would not have any effect on the timing of a motor.

In automotive terms, R&R mean Remove and Replace.

or even Remove and Re-install

if you have a spun balancer, your car will most likely run like shit(if thats what you meant about the timing being f'ed up).
