Have a ? for the 05's+ guys

A buddy here at work has a grabber orange and was just telling me that this morning on the way to work a "low tire pressure" light came on. So he asked me if i knew anything about that..of about how does car detect you have a low tire pressure. is there like a sensor inside the wheels? & what if you get aftermarket wheels will that function not work then? we were just wondering, any answers would help.

thanks

There are 2 types of sensors. Band mounted and stem mounted. See Modern Tire Dealer - Performance Hand Book for a brief explanation.

hm thats interesting. i think nissan's tire pressure monitor is tied in iwth the ABS system- the low tire will have a different speed reading and set the light.

So you can't rotate your tires without messing it up? The tires are registered to the location, so it would register the wrong location...

If they are like the vettes then the batteries go bad after about 5 or 6 years. Then you have to have you wheels broken down, and off course it's a special battery you have to buy.

It's good technology for those of use who don't care to check our tire pressures regularly. My wifes Honda tire pressure light went on and she went directly to the dealership for a repair! LOL!
