HELP.. We're burning up here.

Does anyone have a friend or anything that can take a look at a window A/C unit I have. Or know of a reputable place that isn't going to attempt to gouge me? It has started working sporadically and I need to find out if the compressor is going bad or it's low on freon, or possibly something else. I sold my guages years ago so i have nothing to check this unit with.
