Help with Speaker Box for New Sub

Wife just bought me a Rockford Fosgate P2 12" sub for my stang.

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-GLa1VIn...7700&search=p2

Is going in a 1991 Vert trunk (if you can call it that) but I have come to learn that the depth of the speaker is greater than that of the space between the trunk floor and trim panel where the top folds down into.

I was thinking about placing it in the spare wheel well (like in the last issue of MM&FF). Its recommed to place it in a sealed box with .85cf of space. How do I determine cubic feet of space?

What I am thinking of doing is getting some 3/4 inch plywood to cover the wheelwell and mounting the speaker to that over the wheel well and using some Dynamat in the wheel well thus making it my box. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks

There are some calculators online that will determine how much box you will need for a certian size speaker. There is also some free software that helps you design a speaker box. Just do a search.

I'm not sure if I am picturing what your saying in my head right, but if I am, Ive been told by some of the reps Ive talked to not to put a sub directly into a spare tire area without heavy mods to the wheel well first. reason being is heat from what they said and the stability of that area in particular compared to against a backseat. Also if you want that sub to sound really clean you are gonna want to make some way for the air to escape, not a big deal but it helps the sub. I am just learning abou most of this stuff, but if you want call 210-979-6626. It's the number to the circuit city I work at, just ask for Shane he is the dept. manager of car electronics and installation. Tell him your a old friend of Phil in merch(thats me) ask him what he thinks about your idea, also they might be able to install it for you, the guys do a really good job there as far as hiding wires and stuff. They will at least let you know of any problems you may run into in the future, just dont tell them you are going to do the install yourself cuz then they wont tell you much...just make it seem like your gonna bring it in but you have a lot of questions before you drive all across texas to get it installed...

Thanks. Yeah thats what I was talking about by putting it in the spare tire well. In the last issue of MM&FF, the are taking a 12" Sony Xplod sub, mounting to a 3/4 inch piece of MDF then lining the wheel well with Dynamat and placing the sub in the well. Its a 2 part article so I have just read part 1. As far as the heat issue, I think you maybe right. When I 1st read the article, I thought they were installing this in a vert but when i re-read it, they are installing it in a hatch so it would a lot less suceptable to the heat that way.

As far as a sealed versus ported box. I am also new at this but from what I have read so far, a sealed box offers tighter bass in less space to where a ported box offers better tuning. I am thinking sealed because I want the bass nice and tight and not that long dragged out reverberating sound. Also, the manufacturer recommends a sealed box with .85cf of inner air space.

The more I think about it, the more I am leaning towards a wedge shaped box that I can push mostly toward the rear seat or a square box that I can place in the spare wheel well and mount in place and trim the wheel well cover around it so that its just about a 3" protrusion from the well.

I know BigJnSA has a couple of subs in his trunk (also a Fox vert) but I cant remember how his set up is.

depends on your sub and your vent to how boomy it sounds vs. nice and tight punchy bass...

my current setup can be punchy as hell, or i can up the bass on my HU and it can draw out bass like no other, everyone is extremely impressed with the output of my single 10" depends on the crossover frequency and how high i turn up the bass.. it's a great sound quality setup or enough to annoy cars next to you

http://home.earthlink.net/~bmagik/mustang/subwoofer.jpg

subwoofer- Resonant Engineering RE 10" (600w rms/1200w peak)
amplifier- JBL BP600.1 (600w rms@12v 2ohms/ probably does closer to 700w off the 14.4v altenator voltage)
box- 1.5ft^3 tuned to 38hz straight off the RE website (www.respl.com i think)

subwoofer is $165 shipped or so i believe and the amp was $200 new off ebay when i got it, but i'm pretty sure they are discontinued now, made the box myself.

now, i need to dynamat my rattling POS trunk lid and interior panels

I can second the box design shown above... I had a similar setup in my old truck... even though it was ported, it could have serious tight punches or low drawn out thumpin... I always suggest having a custom shop make you a box. They can tune it for the speaker and the location you have the box located... In fact, from talking to the local shop that does competition sound, etc told me that in a trunk it is best to run a ported box, as it utilizes the trunk as an encloser, etc etc... *shrug*

Im gonna go take a look at BigJ's and see how he did his and listen to it to see if its the type bass im looking for, then I will probably go to a shop and talk to them about it and get a price for a box and other mounting options. Didnt think putting in a sub was such a scientific endevor.

Too bad converse isn't near Houston as far as I know, i'd show my setup off for you.

And yeah, what he said: Vented boxes use the trunk as one giant box making deeper bass.

well, i dont have a RE, XXX, brahma, W7 or solobaric.... i only have 2 10" JL w1's (old school). TheBocSez has a fox vert just like mine, and if you have ever seen the trunk in a vert, you know airspace is practically nonexistant. so running a box that needs a huge amount of airspace is out of the question, unless you want to fiberglass the trunk. i think all he is looking for is a little bass to fill in the lows that hes lacking.
