how do you tell which lifter is bad?

out of a '91 Explorer 4.0L v6 1 or more of them were making noise. i have already pulled them out of the engine and a new set of 12 is over $400 how do you tell which 1's are bad when they are out of the car already?

Dont know for sure but you can drop um in a can of oil and try to pump each one with a screwdriver or pushrod if they pump up they should be good to go.
I found these on Ebay 4 ea for 12 bucks

Yeah, get some oil in them, pump them up; they should firm up very quickly if they are good.

You didn't say how many miles were on the lifters. If they are relatively low mileage (less than 75000 miles) I would think that they were sticky from oil deposits. You could soak them in carb cleaner for an hour or so and then take apart and clean each one individually. You want to be especially carefull here because you don't want to get the parts mixed up. After cleaning drop them in a can of clean oil and depress each lifters insert four or five times with an old pushrod or wooden dowel and if they pump up that's all that was the matter.
