yeah the .50 upper comes next year! I wanted something I could take a good sized hog down with as well. I took a 450lb one down about 4 yrs ago with a 300savage so I figured I'd need at least the .243 to penetrate the hide. |

.223 is sufficient for hunting - but shot placement is important with smaller rounds.
an AR in .223 makes an excellent varmint rifle, and can take hogs and small deer. if you plan on hunting a lot of bigger game, an AR in 308 may be a better option. or if you want to save money, you could look into ak varients as well. they may not be able to achieve quite the same accuracy as an AR, but some varients are very well suited for hunting. check out the VEPR and saiga line of rifles. edit: i see that you mentioned hunting large hogs... .223 will do fine, but shot placement is extremely important with larger animals. with a large hog, you should definately go for the "behind the ear" shot to ensure a quick and painless kill. personally, i usually use a .270 loaded with 130 grain core lokts, and i have used a saiga chambered in 308 as well. yes...make sure the shot you hit on a large hog is the money shot...otherwise you'll jus piss it off...i can tell you that from actual experience...was treed by a 350 lbs boar for quite a few hours...hit him 5 times with the .38 after i shot him the the AR and then he charged me..i dropped the AR climbing the tree....he was big and pissed!!!...took him a few hours to finally bleed out and die before i was safe to come back down... |

this is why it's so important to get a good shot. hog's forheads have been known to deflect large caliber rounds, and like you said - any shot that doesn't kill it will probably just piss it off. |

yeah, the one i hit was the biggest anyone had ever seen on our ranch.... when i took the shot he was about 80yds away, say a puff of dirt where he was hit, dropped his butt and then took off in the brush. We found him about 20-30yds in with a perfect behind the shoulder shot. When I was skining him I noticed that I missed the infumous(sp) shoulder (3in thick or more hide) by an inch.
another time a friend of my dad tried to take out one with an .223 AR from about 150yds...... say a bunch of puffs on his shoulder.....thing looked around and continued rooting. |

If you are serious about hunting with the .223, I would stick with a 20" barrel, the round loses a lot of much needed velocity with the 16" barrel. Of course, this is mostly for those hunting 2 legged predators with FMJ (need high velocity to get the round to tumble and fragment properly to create a catastrophic wound), hunting SPs may not be as velocity dependent. I hear hog hunting involves going into a lot of brush where a shorter barrel would be handy.
But then, that is the beauty of the AR. You can buy one lower from a FFL and slap a short or long barrel .223, .22LR, 7.62x39, .458 SOCOM, .50 Beowulf, or .50 BMG upper on it. I've shot the 50 Beowulf, it is about like shooting low recoil slugs from a shotgun and would probably make for a great short range hunting rifle. The velocity drops off like a bitch though, the hold-over at 200 meters is ridiculous.

Yeah, I would not reccomend that to my worst enemy. Once you get charged by a 450 lb. ferrel hog you will only pack high powered weopans.
