Idle problem

i threw a cobra computer in my 1994 GT, along with 80mm MAF, and 24# injectors... i think the MAF and injectors are the correct specs for a 94-95 cobra, but ever since i can get her to run right... idle surges and sometimes dies... planning to get a dyno tune on sat... ive heard that a bad TPS can be the cause of a bad idle but i had it checked at the ford house and they said it was fine. I dont want to get a tune and find out it didnt fix the problem, rather fix it and then get it tuned... Any suggestions???

I'll ask a few of my buddies that have cobras. I'm kind of . not real sure. What about the Idle Air Control Valve?

its plugged in, and was working before i swapped the compu... i called ford and gave them the serial number on the computer before i put it in to verify that it was for a 94-95 cobra.

did you check the voltage to your tps sensor? it should have three wires going to it. ones a ground, ones constant 5 volts and the others the signal wire. it should read .95-.99 with the key in the "on" position. his should clean up some idle problems.

thanks, but like i said ford said it was fine.... but their also notorious for saying nothing is wrong.... ill probably take it autozone or orileys cause im pretty sure they have a voltage meter i can use... im assuming that if i replace the TPS and get it dyno-tuned there should be no problem... ill keep you posted

What 80mm MAF are you running? If it is not the one for the Cobra then the transfer function may be different. You may have to adjust the set screw on the TB as it may need to be in a different postion with the new gear.

you have a problem because you have an e303 cam and a 94-95 cobra computer

you will have plenty of problems if your MAF is calibraqted for 24s at first because you are overcompensating with fuel at idle.

something not stated in there is, the cobra computer IS a good foundation. with tweecers people start off the cobr aprogram and tune from there. The problem is, The cobra computer has a fuel DUMP in fourth gear. I dont even know if the sct will control that fuel table in the cobra computer. If you change just the table universal, you will in fact lean out gears 1-3, yet you dyno in 4th gear and it will look tuned in 4th. Ask your tuner to remove the fuel enrichment in 4th gear. Another big gain in tuning with the 94-95s is tip in retard. If you powershift you will not be effected by this, but if you remove it, you will have a nice change in racing and on the street when you first stabb the throttle.

Thats what the tuner and i discussed... he stated that the Cobra compu would dump fuel just as you stated, but with the chip, he could correct this problem. Obviously the dump would rob my power, which i do not want. When i call today ill discuss the, for lack of better terminology, "retard" factor and see what he thinks... ive heard alot of good things about these guys, and in my opinion, not to badmouth another shop, ive have not been satisfied with HPP... Either way, the car is not coming out of the shop until its running correctly.

Thanks for the tip about 4th gear

Hell yes, cam is very key. do you have the new revised performers?
Though the gains with a custom grind cam might not be astronomical, the area under the curve and the power difference could literally make your car around 3 mph faster in the 1/4. I'd say thats worth a 279 dollar custom grind camshaft. parts and labor.

the "tip-in retard" is also the actual terminology. when you floor the car it pulls timing and there is a small delay until the tune gets where it should be. It makes a difference especially in the trap speed of someone who does not power shift their car.

So the car is running off the GT computer or the Cobra unit?
