impossible hwy gas mileage?

this doesn't seem possible to me, but i can't figure out where i was lead astray. my truck is an 04 ranger 5spd 4cyl w/ 15k miles. it claims 29mpg hwy. the fuel gauge, speedo, and odo/trip meters work fine, or at least haven't been problems. no aftermarket anything on the truck.

i was bored today and since i'm about to head out on a 1500 mile road trip, i figured i'd try to give her a mpg test. i decided to see the very best gas mileage i could possibly get out of her on the hwy. the few city lights i was at i shifted at 2,750rpms, and i cruised at 59-61mph in OD (2,150-2,250rpms) the whole way, tailgate up, no a/c. ever hill i shifted to neutral and coasted down it, and other such anal antics.

166.5 mi / 4.498 = 37.02 mpg

i started pumping gas again once it shut off just to make sure it didn't prematurely stop. is this even possible? maybe the gas station pump didn't count right?

no, you probably did get that gas mileage. when they give those mpg numbers they are based on "normal" driving conditions and driving habits.

imma thinking if i covered 20% or so of the grille and covered over the holes in the front bumper, removed a few pounds from the cabin (pass. seat, etc.) i could get damned near 40mpg. :jmg680: i couldn't drive in colorado again after that though, my rep be blown!

way ahead of you. turns out that's a myth, and the high pressure zone in the bed of the truck with the tailgate up keeps the fast moving air from dipping down. as it is, it mostly flows in an arc around it following the lines of say, a camper shell.
