Cool Install Hood Pins | 99-04 Mustang

    pg1

I decided to finally install my FRPP hood pins on my GT. I can't take credit for the idea I used to mount the shorter FRPP pins, as I saw it done somewhere on the net before. So for anyone who hasn't seen it done this way...here ya go.

1st pic is of the FRPP kit I used. As said before the pins are only 3 1/2" long and some fab work had to be done to make them work. I believe Moroso sells longer ones, but I had these and dove in

You need to remove the hood bumpers and clean the paint off in prep to welding. Then enlarge the hole (centered) to 1/2" for the pin to fit thru.

I then tack welded the bottom nuts with the pins threaded, to make sure I was centered. (Notice the use of the high-tech old T and sweats to protect from any welding spatter) Once I was satisfied, I finshed welding on the bottom nuts.

Once done with that, put a dab of paint on the tips of the pins and lower the hood. The paint will transfer to the hood and give you the area to drill out the bottom of the hood, starting with 1/8".

    pg 2 to come....

Now that the bottom of the hood is marked, start drilling. Take it slow and increase the size of the bit until the desired size hole is made. It is also possible to use a hole saw, but being anal, I checked the progress of the hole with each bit by closing it on the pins and checking.

Once that is done, put more paint on the tips of the pins and mark the top size of the hood. You will have to drill the initial 1/8" hole from the bottom, but the rest you can do from the top. Make sure you use auto masking tape to prevent paint chipping. The bottom holes needed to be "massaged" a little and came out nice and round, but no pic.

I chose not to use a hole saw and went up from 1/8" to 1/2" drill bits. Once I hit that size, I decided to do the rest by hand. My bits, no matter what I did, chipped the paint more than I liked.

    pg3 to follow...

Once I finished being anal with all of the drilled holes, I needed to test fit and mark the 4 holes in the plates. Drill the holes, mount the plates, and finally I needed to use some touch up paint to cover up the welded areas/bare metal.

I plan to get some bushings to cut and mount over both of the nuts on the pins, which should finish this nicely.

So there you go. Now go get some hood pins and start drilling
