Laser eye surgery...

I'm curious if anyone has had this surgery...the technical term is Corneal Refractive Surgery. I have an appointment scheduled in September to see if I am a 'good candidate' then, if all goes well, I will have the surgery done in October....for free of course...

I am very much looking forward to waking up and being able to see...

peace and hair grease

I have not had it done, but I know quite a few people that have. Every one of them swears by it now that it is all done.

Is this known as Laser in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK) surgery?

I have not had this type of surgery but I have had eye surgery known as Phacoemulsification ("phaco").

This is a lens replacement surgery done in conjunction with the removal of cataracts. A small incision is placed in the cornea and a laser is used to breakup the lens. This lens tissue is then sucked out and an artificial lens is implanted. So now I have "implants"... I can see perfect and no more glasses/contacts

In LASIK the cornea is cut and laid back and the laser is used to remove tissue behind the cornea. Then the cornea is laid back over the eye.

Either way....it is not as bad as it sounds. Outpatient surgery.

If you wear contacts I am sure they have told you not to wear them for a certain time period before you are examined.

Of course they will scare the hell out of you by going over all the risks.

Good luck....and I hope you qualify. Contacts are a PITA!!

This isn't what you've had done Vic but they DO cut up the eye...just no lens replacement will take place. And you're correct, I am to wear my glasses for 30 days...

15 seconds per eye! Gotta love it.

I would love to have that done. Maybe next year. How, may I ask, are you getting it done for free?

For non military folks that wanna do this...I am told the surgery is down to 1k per eye...use to be extremely expensive....

Hey Mick...Todd had it done about a year and a half ago. Went great...he has better than 20/20 vision in both eyes now.

Mick,
It was very quick and easy. Kinda like getting your uniforms in basic...hurry up and wait, in line. There was about 25 of us in different stages of being prepped for he surgery. First day felt like someone put jalapenos (sp?) in my eyes. After that, the next day, I was seeing better and feeling better.
Of course being the hard headed person I am, I was driving the day after the surgery, probably not the best thing to do. It was frustrating at first...bad sight due to the healing but after that my vision got better than ever before. Now, no more contacts in the morning and riding in the 'vert is much, much better.

Todd

ps Scott: they use a laser at Wilford...on top of the eye.

Same military, but two different worlds. I would NEVER let an army doc near my eyes! I would like to get this surgery done too someday, but im still waiting for it to be 99%+ successful.
Then i can wear cool sunglasses just like Todd.
