More potential: IRS or 8.8?
I have been trying to find a mustang suspension tech site that would better help me with this question, but I haven't found one.
Which has the most potential for handling, the Cobra IRS or live axle 8.8 w/ every upgrade possible... from tq arm to panhard bar? And are there any numbers or facts to back this up? I am repairing a wrecked 00GT and don't want to begin upgrading its existing suspension if an IRS is the way to go. Thanks. |

carrol shelby would tell you the 8.8 live axle ![]() The mustang irs is not really a good irs. Its an irs adapted to use the priginal live axle mounting locations. It needs to be upgraded almust as much.

werd. IRS, if you are doing auto-x. if you do, skip the '99 cobra IRS (28-spline. weakest of them all), borderline with '01 IRS (31-spline but not as strong as 03/04), and for sure '03/04 IRS (31-spline. strongest halfshafts - built to withstand stock blower - in theory anyway).
'01 IRS - you can upgrade teh halfshafts with the '03/04s. direct fit but they are $250 to350 each side. all IRS really need IRS bracing, bushings,, etc to take care of wheel hop and twisting. If you are staying with stock GT stuff (i.e. no power adders) most of this stuff may not be required but still advisable. |

Personally I rather have a well set up live axle (4 link panhard bar etc) than an IRS. If done properly and set up correctly will handle as well or better than an IRs and be alot more durable
Good reading here man: Late Model Mustang Suspension Basics
