Sounds to me like they are instructing you to wash JUST the rims with dishsoap/water afterwards. I don't think that would hurt anything. I know dishsoap is bad for your paint. Maybe I'm reading it wrong?

no you are reading it right, but dishsoap will take off the polish you just put on

The polish should just clean the metal. It shouldn't be leaving a coating on the wheel (at least not any metal polish that I've ever used). The way I've always done wheels is wash with simple green. Then follow up with the claybar. After that, hit it with a good metal polish. Buff that off and then follow up with a sealer. Once the sealer is applied, then just wash them with a good car wash soap to maintain.

dave, You dont need to clean the wheel after you polish it unless you cant get all of the excess black polish off.
I use a Flitz ball and it too works great. One tip...The hotter the wheels, the easier they are to polish. I usually do one side at a time. I wash them then site one side in direct sun for a few hours then polish. It makes it easier. When my brother does it at the shop he take sone of those big industrial heaters and put the wheel in front of it for a few minutes, and it works great! Also Dave you can get some rejext wax and wax the wheels after you polish them, it helps maintain the shine longer

I guess it depends on what metal polish you use. The couple that I always use do not offer any protection for the wheel once buffed off hence the use of sealant.
