My River

As I get up on my soap box...I try and think what the city council of New Braunfels is trying to do to our river. First of all they are trying to curb inappropriate behavior on the rivers. They are trying to accomplish this by limiting the number of "12 oz beverages" you can carry, by controlling the size and design of our coolers. I wonder if anyone has actually tried to tube the river with one of these proposed "coolers"?? I agree with the council that something has to be done or the river will get out of hand, but there are already laws in place to "control" the situation we have. It is absurd to think that limiting the size of a cooler would thwart the creativeness of a "College Student's" ability to bend the rules. I remember going on a "class function" where "alcohol" was banned and a friend used green food coloring to bring vodka with him, just to see if he could get away with it...and he did. Stricter enforcement of these laws and higher monetary penalties will limit the number of offenses, period. I can't believe the narrow-mindedness of some of the members of my city council...what about the families?? Is each child responsible for their individual cooler?? I have a hard time seeing that...What I do see is a cooler that is a potential hazard to the safety of anyone on the river. The added weight of at least 6lbs. attached to a tube or around their waist...deadly. You don't think so...think about it...going down the tube shoot on the Comal and instead of your tube being buoyant it pulls you further under water, or if the "cooler" is wrapped around your chest it alone pulls you down beneath the shoot where some have a hard time swimming any way. Now picture your 80 year old grandmother or your 60 yr old parents or worse your 10 yr old child trying to do the same. I reiterate, how asinine do you have to be not to realize we are potentially putting ourselves and our loved ones in danger??
I digress...there is a problem with some people on our rivers. PLEASE I implore you, do not contribute or condone what these individuals are doing on our rivers. I fear it is almost too late to change the path that the city council has taken. I can only hope our few voices of reason can sway their votes to come to some reasonable answer to our growing problem in New Braunfels.

i completely agree with you on this. i like your choice of words on describing the city council- 'asinine'. it seems every level of gov't is becoming moreso...

Alas another reason I avoid tubing in NB. If I wanta go tubing its concan or north on 281 at the Gauadlupe out there, no stuffy NB politics to deal with and Concan kicks ass ta boot.....

Thats what I do, I avoid tubing nb area all together, but north on 281 doesnt have a tube shoot

I've gone as far up as 'Comfort' to get away from all that crap in nb.

True no tube shoot but that is what Fiesta texas and seaworld are for.

At first I thought that the law was good, I mean why would you want drunk people in a river, but you make alot of sense, a good alternative would be for the government officials to stop giving themselves raises and use that money to have cops at the river controlling what is in the coolers instead of just limiting the size.

it seems like most laws being passed these days are "feel good" laws that are completely void of all reason. they simply go to make uneducated soccer moms feel better.

this goes way beyond any local laws. it goes all they way up to the federal level. law makers tend to be detached from reality... they sit up on a pedestal looking down on us. the things they come up with make perfect sense to them; but to us, they lack all common sense.

I'd be willing to bet they reverse themselves when New Braunfels starts losing money...
People will decide to go to the Horseshoe at Canyon Lake or the San Marcos River instead of dealing with their stupidity.

they lost a minimum of a million dollars in 5 months time last year from the laws that were created and now they're gonna lose even more than that

pretty soon all the small town businesses are gonna go bankrupt all thanks to the US govt.

here's a true story i can tell ya from the good 'ol river in NB...a few friends and i were tubing and watchin a bunch of college kids gettin drunk and acting up..we come along a turn and there's a house there...it has a pool in the yard with a fence around it with a diving board...the college guys get up on the shore, climb the fence and start swimming in the pool....one guy gets up on the diving board dives off and slips when he bounces for the dive, smacks his head on the edge of the pool, blood goes everywhere, ambulance and police show up, mind you the people are not home...they are at church, when all is said and done the kids sued the owners of the house and WON !!!....... i could not believe that those people were put in such a position and ended up on a losing end of that deal...they had to pay for the kids hospital bills and a whole lot more when all was said and done.....they claimed the gate was open...funny thing was..they climbed the fence.....never even went to the gate!!!...

I worked the river all last summer. It was a PITA! Looking for foam and glass and dumb asses, and minors drinking. All while toasting in the sun. But hey its overtime.

There is a place on US HWY 281 at the guadalupe river that ppl tube at. "Canoe Livery"

I remember when I was younger, my whole family and I would Tube/Flout down the river. We would bring 2 coolers, one with food the other with water/soda and maybe a few beers for my dad and uncle. We had the coolers on their own tubes and my dad and uncle tied one each to themselfs. We did that alot back in the day, this was more than 10yrs ago tho.........I miss it.

With all the rain we got these past few days, the river should be flowing pretty good.
Come on out to comal county and bring a big cooler.
We should plan a LSS float day this summer.
I know that DFW stangs came all the way down here for a trip.
