need some electrical help, will pay cash if you fix it

i'm in college station and my stang is acting up. i thought i had found the loose ground but apparently not. if you or someone that knows what they're doing want to take a look-see and try to fix it (and successfully do), i'll pay for your gas, food, and a nice tip.

symptoms:

won't start
all electrical displays except gauges flicker and/or black out randomly
occurs in periods of 2-10 seconds
happens a couple times a month but now its just dead

what i've done:

jump battery
ran for 10 min
turned off
started it (successfully)
put in gear, gave gas and it immediately died
(repeated failure)

i'll pay $$$ if you can fix it and don't feel like just helping.

Sounds like a poor ground...that is what I would start with...

i forgot to note that i found a ground wire that didn't make good contact with the frame and i fixed it. it must be another one, or something else.

some symptoms:

she started today! :woot: i drove to the end of my street and she stalled out at the stoplight.

i tried to at least put up the windows in case i had to leave here there for a bit, but they wouldn't go up unless i turned the radio off. otherwise, all the digital displays would go black as soon as i tried to put up my power windows.

low rpms seem to trigger the eletrical problem (makes it seem like the alt now doesn't it?)

check the wires on the alternator.

look for sparks inside the alternator.

Look for a good schematic for your car and locate all of the grounds and pull em and clean them. Still sounds like a ground problem, and there are many grounds.

You could turn to digital volt meter at wal-mart for about $10. That way you can check the resistance on all the grounds and make sure you have 12v to your primary circuit and a little over 5 to all of you sensors.

I don't know anyone in CS that could help you out. If I was there I could give you a hand.

Have you checked the main ground for the ECM? If it has ever been off the car it needs to be checked because it MUST be grounded properly.

thanks dan.

the ECM isn't a PCM for late model stangs is it? the huge pin-factory that plugs into the EEC? the PCM and comp have been out but i thought i reinstalled it correctly.

The ECM, PCM, EEC, are all the same...The computer. You need to make sure the ground that comes off of the main plug that plugs into the computer is grounded correctly to the chassis behind the kick panel (if I remember right on the newer models).

I'll be shooting you a PM.

Austin I can alos help if you need it still.

I have done a lot of work in car electronics (designed an ECM). If you get a wiring diagram like stated above (either from Ford or from a Haynes Manual) we can go through it and check it all out. Usually the problem you have sounds like a grounding issue be it a ground wire or a main power cable that is loose.

If only 4.25V is getting to the ECU and it needs 5V, then it will screw everything up. Most sensors (especially cam and crank sensors using magnetic pickup techniques) need a reference when the signal is converted for the ECU to read. All the other sensors are analog sensors as well (coolant, MAF, VAF, O2, you name it) and need a voltage reference when going through A2D's. If the reference is off, the conversion is off, the ECU gets wrong info, the car doesn't run right.

I could on and on and on and on!!!
