    Paint question

I have a 87 LX hatchback that was originally grey. Somewhere along the lines it go repainted black. It looks like a cheap paint job that may have cost $500. Im wanting to have it repainted in a yellow color. My question is, what would be best for the car? Does it need to be stripped down ot the metal and reprimered and painted or would a good sanding be enough? I dont want to have the paint job to start flaking off or have to repaint the car in another 5 years either.

Is the cheapo paint job peeling? If not you will most likely be fine.

the main parts that look to be peeling and the bumpers. I plan on replacing the rear bumper anyhow and i can strip the front easily. Other than that I dont see a lot that looks to be peeling/

no one can say for sure without looking at it, but if its a cheapo paint job, it will probably need to be stripped at least down to some good paint, primered and blocked. then repainted. add the fact that its a color change, your looking at the 3-4K range at any shop that gives a **** about their work

3-4k is actually cheaper than what i was thinking. Not that its cheap but i was expecting more. I guess I really need to take it somewhere for an estimate since it needs a little body work.Too bad you in SA, Ive seen your work on here and would love to give you the job if I go this route.

Ive had work come from alot further than Austin. I have a 71 Buick from Dallas right now. Had out of state jobs too.
But I cant take another complete until later in the year if not next year.
Just dont jump on a $1500 bid

I'm really leaning towards having the car resprayed with a single stage urethane. Would that effect the prep work needed to be done? I mean, im not sure what type of paint was used to paint the car last time and im not sure if a urethane would react negatively with a basecoat/clearcoat paint.

You can save alot of money if you are willing to do a little sanding and prep work your self.
Take a look at my FACH1 pics on here (there si a couple biuld threads in the money pit) I pd a little less than 2K for paint but I did 4 months or so of sanding priming and sanding.......And the shop still sanded and reprimed it before paint......

The key to a nice paint job is PREPERATION....... All the $$ in the world wont make a shitty prepped paint job look good...

Fathom the odd hypocrisy that Obama wants every citizen to prove they are insured, but people don't have to prove they are citizens.

If you voted for Obama in 2008 to prove you weren’t a racist, you’d better vote for someone else in 2012 to prove you’re not an idiot.

It's up to the voters to remove the other!

Prep would be the same in either case. Todays base coat clear coat paints are urethane. reaction between paints wont be a problem. My question is, why would you want a single stage? I rarely spray SS, and its usually on junk that someone else prepped, like a utility truck or a dump trailer for a friend or family member. To me, there is no advantage of single stage paint. None. Thats why I dont use it
