I changed a fuel pump out yesterday, found something I had not seen before, a positive fuel pump wire that had shorted out inside the tank. It had obviously shorted out well enough that the wire turned black and the insulation blistered. As high up in the tank as this was, had there been enought oxygen in the tank, it could have been bad. Luckily the ratio of air and fuel vapors inside the tank was not right for ignition, because there was definitely enough heat to ignite the correct ratio of air and fuel vapors.
