Power Window Replacement - '87 Vert
I recently purchased my dream car, a 1987 Ford Mustang GT Convertible. The motor and exterior are in great shape, but there are a few things that need some TLC.
The first thing I would like to do is replace the power windows all the way around. The rear passenger window needs a lot of manual help to roll up and I'm not sure if it is the motor or the regulator. What I'm looking for is a recommendation on a shop that can take a look and see what needs to be done to get the windows back in good shape. Other things that will need some work in the future are replacing the front seats and some other interior work. Any tips on good shops in the DFW area would be great. I'm in the Carrollton/Addison area. Thanks! |

before you drop that kind of cash, i think you would be able to do each window for about $10 and 45 minutes. ive had 3 fords that did this, and its a common problem. if you hit the switch, and hear the motor running, but the window is not moving - its the bushings in the motor. there are 3 plastic parts that break down inside the motor. all you need to do is yank the motor, take it apart, and replace the 3 plastic bushings inside. you can buy the bushings at autozone or pep boys for about $10. they are with the "HELP" brand OEM replacement parts. (like the door strikers, knobs, etc.) good luck.
here is a good write up. its for the SN95 body, and not the fox. however - its exactly the same procedure, and the motors are the same. How to install on window lift bushings. - Mustang Forums at StangNet |

Thanks for the replies fellas. I am not very mechanically inclined, but plan on getting that way by working on this car. I'm guessing the rear windows are a little tougher to get at and that is where I have the major problem. My thought was to find a shop that was willing to let me observe and then I would know for next time.
David - I appreciate the offer and might take you up on that. Have you replaced the rear window motor/bushing on a Vert before? The window motor runs, so I am guessing it might just be the bushings as many have suggested. |

i haven't done this on a mustang vert before, but when it comes to this kind of stuff, most cars are similar enough to figure it out.... i've done window motors on camaros before.. and ask anyone, that's one of the hardest cars to do it on... and i'v edone a variety of other vehicles... plus, the only difference will be that you have to pull the interior panels in the back rather than just the door panel... and i've done lots of stereo work, so interior panel removal is one of my specialties

hey the vert isn'treally hard. I changed out all of the bushings out my motors and it just cost me for the bushings. You can get them at any part store and it doesn't take that long. In the vert you will have to take off the back panels, to get to the motors. The motors are coverd by a black plastic cover. But there not any different then the front door motors except that the gear is longer then the front. But the bushings will work the same
