Question

A girl that i work with drives a 02 malibu and she is overheating. Well I went to take a quick look at her car, and found a oil sludge like material in her coolant reservoir. Now my question is could this be caused by old coolant/antifreeze, or does she have a more serious problem like a cracked block or something along those lines?

Sludge looked and smelled burnt. She has been driving with low coolant for the past 1 1/2 days

oil in the antifreeze (or vice versa if you checked her dipstick) is usually a head gasket.

Yep. My siste has a slight leak on hers and it'll be that way until she gets rid of the car. Taking 2 minutes to add a few cups of water when doing the oil change is much cheaper than getting it fixed. I'm sure as hell not going to pull it apart. Once you start pulling those things apart you end up with more stuff to replace. Then it's all downhill from there IMO.

dunno much about Malibus.... but there was an article on mysa.com about engines sludging over. They said that, if it's a car made to use premium gas and you continually use regular gas, the engine temp changes and oil can sludge over. I had a friend's Endeavor engine sludge over. I asked her about the gas and she said she had been using regular instead of the factory-suggested premium

That's cuz you are a cheap ass.. I'll fix it... for a fee. Standard intake gaskets and v-cover gaskets, t-stat, oil, filter, and coolant is all that is needed

Exactly, you'll fix it, for a fee. My father and my sister have decided that the car isn't worth the fee.

I try not to do repairs to family vehicles if I can avoid it. They can go bad in a hurry.
