Random etherweb Connection question.
Anyhow....
My parents live way the hell out in the booneys (like 20 miles out side of san antonio) and i've unfortunatly moved back home to save some money for a while. Well after begging and begging they finally decided to get the high speed internet. Of course... living that far out limits possibilities. No Cable and No DSL. Leaving Satellite Internet. Now this is of course COSTLY, however my dad and mom wanted it enough that they're paying for it! So there are different packages adn stuff you can connect with for different prices anyhow the one they chose is around this. 300kb-500kb download speed 50kb upload speed I'm sure that the download speed is rivaling DSL\Cable speeds if not exceeding (im thinking exceeding though) HOWEVER i never really knew the upload speed of my dsl modem when i was living in town. What is the normal upload speed for a NORMAL high speed connection such as DSL or Cable....? Thanks! Oh yeah and i'll be home tonight hopefully by around 10 pm, but i just heard there was another threat today around NY so the airports are all having to use the same airspace flying one plane out at a time. Wish me luck on my way home and i'll be looking forward to your NUMEROUS RESPONCES (hopefully) when i get back lol. missed the group, and looking forward to a meet soon! Later.

Download speed is about the same as cable/DSL in most areas. Cable upload usually averages around 40-50kb/s as well.

most, if not all, satellite connections have the 50 up due to the fact that the dish can receive the downloads, but cannot send the uploads. The upload is actually handled via a modem and phone line. At least when I checked em out that was the deal. May want to ask about that, but the speed seems consistent with 56k modem on the up.
The sales pitch I got was that upload is so miniscule compared to download for typical usage that you could not tell. That was before napster and all that jazz got big though...... |

The upload speed sucks. Nowhere near 50k. You also get the same problems as the dish tv, when it rains your internet connection is gonna drop/get messed up. I also think it's overpriced but if your in the boonies it might be your best bet.

upload speed only really matters if you are hosting something from your computer (or network).
otherwise, it's the download speed you want to pay the most atention to. when you visit a web site, for example, the page you are viewing is downloaded to your system after uploading minimal data between your computer, your ISP, their ISP, and their site. |

I have had Direcway when I lived out in west texas........It's pretty good - much better than dialup. The new modem they have works much better also. I have had the DW4020 and upgraded to the DW6000. Much better. Way faster. But in no way does it come close to cable.
